Its the profile that tells you about your lift and duration etc.
As for fitting cams on from big brother, its rather model/manufacturer dependant, same as with heads, as to the ease of compatability.
For example, Hondas engines are all part of a "series" grouping, (like nearly all companies......your CVHs, your Zetecs etc.)The reason they are grouped is because they have similar features. In the case of Honda, all engines in a series have the same bore, meaning a higher spec head can be fitted, to reduce comp. ratio and increase power.
The vauxhall 54deg. V6 engines can have the cams changed. The Vectra GSi has an extra 25bhp compared to its lower spec counterparts because MSD fitted inlet cams from the 3.0, as they fit straight into the 2.5
The trouble with Zetec family of engines, is that they all have the same stroke, meaning the bores all change with capasity. This rules out interchangablity (for the most part....any thing is possible) Fitting a 2.0 head for example would play havoc with your comp. ratio.
I do however understand cookie has fitted one to his though, and id be very interested to hear how he got around any problems
