Ok so we've just sold the mrs old shitbox Peugeot 206 and we need a new car as the si is pretty poor on mpg.

Now budget is £2,500 but closer to £2,000 would be better. It needs to have good mpg and a diesel is likely to be alright as it will be doing a 10-15 mile commute.

I want 5 door, cruise control and really want a quick clear screen. So far I've been looking at 55 plate onward focus Ghia or 2.2l civic but only because they are the only things that I have had experience with.

Any suggestions are gratefully received.

10 miles doesnt really warrant a deisel.

172 can give 45mpg, £1000-2000 and a lot of fun!

I will say the same, the mileage doesn't really point to diesel, as for the 172 mpg, it could do that, but the happy button would keep getting pressed and it would reduced massively.

I say this as my C2 could do many more mpg, but that isn't what I bought it for.

Ok so maybe not a diesel then. I thought diesel got better mpg as long as it had time to warm up, also don't Diesel engines last longer?

Either way, as I said I am open to all suggestions, we just want a nice car with a few nice features that's cheap and economical to run.

Don't think so.

Diesels are just bought to save money when someoe does massive trips all the time and will make a saving.. well most of the time, cant understand why people buy hem otherwise.

I'm selling my Megane 2.0 Dynamique 3 door black at the minute. 35mpg maybe, but it's a pile of stinking horse shit.

For those few miles, I would get something comfy but fun or if you really want to get crazy MPG, look at getting a seat ibiza sport TDi. My money would be on an Audi or VW.

Just test driven a 1.9 turbo diesel Audi A4 £3685 (after a little haggle down £3885) 2003 nice to drive but feel it is a little over priced, what do you guys reckon?

Being a 2003 it will have the same chassis as mine the b6. I love my a4, its the most compfor
table car I have owned and still has abit of poke when needed. The 1.9s are good and get decent figures from a remap. Retro fit options are easy to fit so dont worry to much if it doesnt have cruise control etc, it can be fitted easily with oem audi parts. Whats the milage and service history. Sport or SE? Saloon or avant?

VW Golf MK4 GT TDI. Plenty of bhp and torque, good mpg, and great performance and modding potential.

I decided against the 03 Audi as it was too much, I have found an 04 Audi a4 it's 1.9tdi 130SE it has cruise control, been remapped and is £2900 only problem that is causing me to worry is that there is a small area of bubbling on the roof rack/water drainage area. It is a thin line about 4/5 inches long but I've read about it and it seems pretty common on audi's in general. Should this stop me buying?
