hi all im looking for a change of car and away from fords (had fords for 6 years now), something a bit more bigger boot space as i need it for my sons buggy etc. anyways ive seen a few 306 dt about for sale and just woundering what there like. i know a few members on here have had/got 306's , what are they like to drive? comfort, advantages, disadvantages etc......you know what i mean. had a look on some sites and it seems to me like the HDI engine is the better one! am i correct in saying this? modification wise im not thinking major, air filters, lowering the suspension, wheels, maybe exhaust system, small things that would make it run better. anyways what do you think of this car and would it be better than bying another mk3 fiesta ( as i say ive had them for 6 years and getting a bit bored! ), not too sure on escorts, not my cup of tea at the moment. just i always see 306's about and think there really nice cars. thanks for you help/ comments in advance Michael |

ive had a 306 HDi diesel for 9 years from new now done 205,000 miles nothing major, just intank fuel pump, air con rad, tyres, exhaust, cat and a couple of the expected Peugeot electrical issues. if you can stretch to the later HDi's 2 litre 90bhp engine seems better than the ealier one and can get 50 to 60 mpg comes with electric everything, ABS, half leather and cam belt change every 92k. check rear beam and suspension, hand brake (as rear calipers cease) and test all the electrical gadgets |

If you're looking at a derv then air filters are no good! You want to be fiddling with the diesel pump for more ponies and switching to a bigger intercooler. Get the newest one you can, then crank up the power! Ry will prob know more but I'm sure 140bhp and 200lb/ft can be easily had with a fiddle. You can either just fit a magic box to turn up the diesel injection pressure or have a full re-map. Don't be put off by the low bhp figure, it's all about the torque and you'll be slaying hot hatches in gear. As for suspension mods I'd imagine just rob all the bits of a GTi-6, don't bother with expensive aftermarket crap. |

Derv = Diesel. Slang or something. Get a HDi engine IMO. Newer and nicer, same mod cons as the GTi-6, you can even get them on 52/53 plates beleive it or not if you're lucky. People go on about the 1.9 TD's as they are *cheaper* to modify as you physically turn the boost up if you want to in a matter of seconds, whereas the HDi is ECU controlled. I'd rather have a more reliable engine with much better MPG thanks. With a intercooler or charge cooler and remap, you can get HDi's past 260lb/ft+ and 120bhp+ and not only will it slay a GTi-6 on the road, but it will produce better MPG still. You should see some of them own 6's on quarter miles. Funny! Air filter/Exhaust will benefit but not much. |
