Post subject: | French crew........help required |
Basically, I'm thinking of selling the beemer and going french for the summer, to see what I think. I have a few cars in mind, one especially but I was wondering if you could let me know your opinions on these cars, performance wise, problems I should look out for when looking etc. In order of desirablility: 1.clio williams 2 2.clio 172 3.106 Gti Chosen these three as they are a similar price and insurance seems to be fairly reasonable on all. Any help would be appreatiated. Many thanks Emlyn |

Good Choice with the Williams, im sure Graham will input into that, only problem could be there age? The 172, well there good cars but scott's jacked his off and gone back to his 106 Gti as the Gti was a better drive and more fun. ![]() My choice would be between the williams and Gti! ![]() |

172's are coming down in price quite a bit lately, but the interior is crap and build quality is quite naff tbh. however I can imagine it's a more pleasant car todrive day in day out. 106 gti you can't go wrong with, great car and cheap parts and very quick car without a doubt. Though I'd seriously consider a P1 VTS instead. If I could though, I'd opt for the williams ![]() of course i will also say of course the 306 gti, as I'm really starting to fall in love with mine now but it's more grown up and not as chuckable as the 106. I guess the 106 ticks more boxes than the 306, but it depends if it ticks the right ones or not. |

Cheers guys ![]() Yes I have been warned to watch out for rust on the williams as the rear arches tend to go apparanty. Pug's don't have rust issues do they? You think the 106 would be much slower than the williams in standard form? And what sort of power gains can be had on the gti lump or is it pretty highly strung allready? Ry- I do like 306's but just want it to be as small as poss for some reason so 106 will probs be the choice. Thanks for the help guys Emlyn |

you've got 2 shape saxo's. i'd say easily the standard williams would easily have the edge on a standard 106 gti. engine wise on the 106 you have breathing mods which actually do make a difference for a change, and after that it's the usual cams, tb's, carbs, turbo, sc, etc |

Gti should have no rust, any rust is because of repairs, so walk away. The Williams would have the edge over the Gti, just. But the 106 responds well to tuning and the parts are easy to get hold of and are cheap, you can get a ITB set up for around 2k fitted 160+bhp easy and the noise that would scare little children! ![]() ![]() |

Sweet ![]() ![]() Just out of interest, what made you get a rallye over a gti matt? Emlyn |

Spur of the moment really, decided i wanted rid of the 2.0l, looked on piston heads at various cars, always liked Rallye's this one was on there, was around the corner from where i worked, went to look at it was minty mint and knew i wanted it. Was a Omen! Never looked back since! ![]() There's loads of Rallye Vs Gti debates on the 106 Owners club, most say the Rallye is more of a Drivers car, but then people argue its only a 8v and not 16v so why bother etc, best way is to get a valvered Rallye! ![]() ![]() ![]() I would have taken you out in mine and then Scott could have taken you out in the Gti, but the next time ill be at a FSi meet she'll be charged so would be an unfair comparison. ![]() |

Oh and the only Reason i haven't Valvered mine is i just want to be different, everyone seems to be doing it and im fed up of following the Flock, but its like the 2.0l conversion, lots of people do it because it is a good conversion! ![]() You will pay more for a rallye though, but the White and Nana (yellow) Gti's also fetch more than other colours! ![]() |

It's all about having a white 106 gti or a s1 rallye with 16v conversion in my book! ![]() looks, cheap to run for what it is and fun factor. what more could you ask for? |

Oh right, well thanks for the info, would have been good to have a comparison but nevermind. would be a bit unfair when yours is charged ![]() Yeah, been browsing around and I am swaying towards the idea of the 106 more now over the clio's. Some pretty good track day vids on youtube aswell, one in particular with a nutter in a williams around cadwell being followed by a rallye, you'd think he was a d1 drifter the way the back end fly's around the place. ![]() Cheers for the help Emlyn |

Got another question, there seem to be 2 models of 106 Gti, a 120bhp and a 135bhp Is this the case? And how can one tell the difference please? Thanks Emlyn |

Renaults are awful build quality. There's nothing in a Williams and a GTi really. A 172 will be quicker than both at higher speeds and has a lot more grunt than a GTi. My 172 is a Cup so has a few suspension tweeks but handled well. Stuck to the road very well. Far too stiff for the road but would've been a hoot on track. I've driven a 182 with Cup packs and that was just as stiff and too skittish. If you can drive a car properly the GTi will outhandle the Clio, it's more versatile and more responsive to throttle inputs when cornering. The Clio won't be affected by cheap mods. You'll need to spend money on bigger things to make any real difference, my de-cat on it made no difference at all. GTi will fall apart, feel like a bag of bolts but pretty much always make you laugh when you drive it. I can't comment as I've not owned a mk1 Clio but I've not heard the best things about reliability, rust and all the joys that go with motoring a baguette. |

Thanks, Pretty annoying how some places state that it's 135bhp, got my hopes up ![]() On all the vids I've seen the 106's do tend to look a lot more nimble than clio's generally, but on long corners it looks to be pretty equal. It sounds like the 106 is the safer bet though really, and from what you guys say sounds to be more fun to drive. Cheers for then help. Only question now is which colour ![]() ![]() Emlyn |

I prefer white but Ive only seen one for ale so far and it was megga bucks. That bright red is pretty awsome, especially with some black rims, you know if GTI-6 rims are the same offset? Emlyn |
