Regarding 172's

Am I right in thinking that there are 2 variations of the phase 2 shape,
the cup version being lighter etc.

Or is it that the first bubblie shape is the heavier one and all the phase 2 ones
are lighter?

Just trying to work out if the old shape ones are as good basically.
My friend has a phase 2 cup and I really like it, just wondering about the old
ones as they are so cheap.

P.S I did read Scott's review but couldnt work out if you meant the those changes
were between the new shape 172 and cup or the old one and cup.

Ta

Phase 1
First incarnation of the RS Clio. Came with air con, half leather all your usual toys.

Image

Phase 2
Facelifted RS. Different dash board, different front end and rear end. The basics are the same suspension/running gear. It gained some weight.

Image

Phase 2 Cup
All the differences I listed.

Image

Best place to look is the Renaultsport website: http://www.renaultsport.co.uk/roadcars/heritage/
It'll tell you most things you'll need to know. Journo's alike say the Cup is the choice if you're into just driving and you can live without toys (it's hardly sparse compared to some). I've not been in a normal ph2 172 but I'd imagine it's far more comfortable. The Ph1 is quicker than the Ph2 because of the weight gain but it's still not quite as quick as the Cup.

Basic 0-60 stats off the top of my head are:
Ph2 172 - 7.0sec
Ph1 172 - 6.8sec
Ph2 Cup - 6.5sec

Worth noting the Cup is only 7/10ths slower to 100 than the V6 :hsugh:

I'm not a top speed man at all, this is exactly the type of car I want, but
I just keep having different ideas popping into my head lol.

Basically up to about £3000 or max £3500.

Must be a hatch or small coupe, faster the better.

I was dead set on getting a cupra, but got my rent dates and amounts wrong so don't think
I'll have enough now. Or if I did it would be a high milage etc.

Really like my mates cup but again with my budget it would be quite a tatty one I think,
so looking at the ph1's really.

Just found out how fast fiat coupe 20v turbos are once modded but don't really think its me.
They don't exactly look agile but I don't really know anything about them other than they are
cheap.

It's a Fiat. They can be expensive to fix as there's quite a few odd parts on it and there's a lot of power going through those front wheels! The Ph1 is a good choice. Just don't get a silver one. I love them in yellow! Deffo be my first choice. Sadly there's only about 30 around.

or something

I'll get a drive in my mates cup to see if I like the feel of it, It certainly feels good from the
passanger seat  I take it they are pretty similar?
to drive.

(starts shopping for cheapest insurance quotes)

Thanks

I've only driven Cups and 182s with Cup packs. They drive similar ish. The Cup is harsher and noisier. I've been a passenger in a Ph1 and it felt OK, but we were in the middle of town, three's up and the lad didn't want to kill anyone so really it was only poking it from one corner to another. Went OK though.

I'd buy a Ph1 and put bits from the Ph2s on it as they wore out. The Red looks nice too. I was going to have a Ph2 in Flame Red but then started looking at Cups and forgot about it. I think the wheels are slick on the Ph1s but they need to be dark.

I paid £900 @ 22yrs 2NCB with clean license and very good area. Paying £550 this year. I doubt it'll drop much next year sadly. I think I'm getting close to 'good insurance'.

Guess thats not too bad then, as I don't have a NCB as I was a named driver for the
last 4 years. Just did compare the market or whatever, best quote is ......wait for it...
....£3400   One company wanted £4600 haha.

Think I will be staying with Bell for £900 :) Get to drive other cars too 3rd party
as its inlcuded in the fully comp price of £900.

I've had mine about a 8" off the floor before, it's really easy to cock it up. Holding it can be quite tricky. That Trophy is the real deal. Apparently it's easier on a Cup or Trophy but I'm not so sure. Lots of grip at the front end though.
