hey, after the XR project going down so well (really not!)

ive been upset, and went comfort shopping

put a deposit on this, was located 50miles away in Abergavenny, whats more they will deliver it for £40 on top, cost me that in petrol to go view it,
which is the main reason i want a diesel run around, the si is too much on fuel just going to work, £30 each week atleast, and im only doing 15hrs a week, its just not on

its a silver t reg 1999 Ford Escort Turbo Diesel finesse estate, 135k on the clock,

bad points it needs atleast 1 lowerarm/wishbone, during the test drive it pulled /swerved on gearchange and the turning was quite wobbly, suspect the bushes are franked

i noticed the drivers sill needs 2 or 3 plates welded in as they have holes in it and some rust spots

both rear arches by the doors are rusty, but its not deep thankfully, i can just treat and spray

needs a pair of front tyres, and is missing a backbox,

apart from that it needs tax and test and im laughing

all this and ive got a T reg diesel estate workhorse for less than £400

good points, apart from the wabble, it drives really well, plenty of power on tap, pulled off with my foot down and come 3k the wheels were spinning

interior is in good condition (roof lining over the rear seats was sagging a tad)
pas, central locking, electric windows, Turbo diesel with intercooled model 90ps/89bhp with far more torque than its equivalent the 1.6 zetec, with far better fuel economy too
foglights, tacho and half a tank of juice!

will be getting delivered by thursday

ill fix it up in the garage as its still SORN, weld some plates in, hammerite the sills, if its a close colour match (you never know!) ill do the arches while im there, do the wishbones and fit a backbox and put it in for a test then tax, adn the si will come off the road for some TLC

shes not going anywhere thou ;)
(if anyone has a estate backbox performance or standard get in touch!)

I dont understand how your saving money, its gonna take around 10 weeks to pay for its self then you have an extra car to tax, mot and insure. Obviously if the si came off the road fair enough

Well didn't you miss the point, yes I've said the Si will be coming off the road, it still has till end of Sept in tax, so it will do for show season, then next year I can tax for another 6 months for show season, insurance get swapped over at the expense of a phone call, and is insured for up to 2 weeks at q time free of charge

Used to do the sqme thing with the green mk3 run around I had, but this is faster, more luxurious and bigger than a fiesta (on average)

I was thinking of an estate once the Hatchback Scrote TD blows up

Looks good mate :)

What you need to do ASAP is turn the boost up to 18psi (standard 15) turn the preboost fueling up a tad, and turn the max fuel screw up a tad, and jesus mate it'll fly :D
And still good MPG!!

;)

haah, paul tell me more!

15psi is impressive, considering a standard RS turbo uses only 8psi lol

how do i find these screws, beleive it or not thats the first thing i looked for on the inspection haha, where are the screws and how much of a turn is needed?

how much more stress does it cause?

TD's boost alot more than petrols ;)

I will gather all the correct info for you mate and post it in a while ;)

As long as you don't go over the top the extra stress isnt really noticed, ford made the engine in its detuned state for better figures lol

happypaul's Ford Endura TD engine quick tuning guide
*note, I am not a mechanic, and I don't know what I'm doing either ;) so don't blame me if it goes tits up! *

Best thing to do on the Escort is jack up the front end, and un-do the 4 13mm bolts holding the radiator housing behind the bumper.. be careful not to rag it around too much especially if you have A/C.
This will lower down enough for you to access the bits on the pump!

Remove the plastic cover and front grill also.

Now you'll be able to reach to the pump fairly easily (I'll get pics tomorrow when I mod mine some more!)

Now what you could do is a few things...
1:- Adjust the boost compensator only (this is pre-boost fuelling) this will give your car some bollocks while setting off and get the turbo spooling faster as a result. It will throw black smoke out if turned up, but thats fine.
2:- Do the above and do the max fuelling screw, along with some more boost.
3:- Turn the boost compensator DOWN, and turn the max fuelling screw HIGHER, (and more boost) which in turn will give fuelling across the whole of the rev range and will stop it smoking like a mofo before the turbo is fully spooled.

See here:-
Image

This is the boost compensator, use a 14mm spanner to un-do the locknut, and a 4mm allen key to turn the screw..
1:- Turn the screw anticlockwise between 3/4 - 1.5 turns and lock it off. Go enjoy better setting off and a little smoke!
2:- Do the same.
3:- Wind it all the way in clockwise and then wind out 1.5-2 turns.

Now see this pic:-
Image

I have circled a plastic screw cap in green, forget the other stuff its a load of BS apart from the shocker thing, but I dont think escorts have that.. mine didnt.
Behind this plastic bit is the max fuelling screw inside the pump!

Cover your alternator up, and if poss get something to catch the diesel while you open it up.
Use a screwdriver and gently tap this bung ANTICLOCKWISE and unscrew it.

Inside you will see a gear, in this gear you will find a 4mm allen key hole.. if you dont see it, rock the car in gear until you can see it!

Image
Image

Shove a 4mm allen key in there and get some leverage.. you want to be turning this CLOCKWISE. and it is TIGHT!

Image

2:- As you have turned the boost compensator up, don't go too mental otherwise it will smoke like fook off boost.. so *according to other guides* I would turn the screw 30-40 degrees.
3:- Turn it some more, because you need to give it more fuelling after turning down the preboost fuel.. 306 users have found 90 degrees of turning was enough before smoke at full throttle, I am unsure of this just yet but I turned mine around 60-70 degrees (and will be doing more tomorrow!)

After doing that, screw the cap back on tight.
Prime the pump with the push down primer on top of the fuel filter.
Bolt the rad back up.
Enjoy!

BOOST!
What you need is, plumb a manual boost controller into the pipe going from actuator to turbo, and adjust as you like. You NEED a boost gauge. I got a nipple and fitted it into the side of the intercooler to get my boost readings from!

Note: photos are robbed from a mondeo and 306 pumps, the escort pump is a pig to get to without dropping rad down, trust me

i know nothign about diesels compared to petrols, ill leave all this well alone for a while, untill i want more omph

atm im more interested in ditching the standard intercooler and plumbing one to the bumper, a bigger one!

maybe a focus ST or mondeo 2.0 one :D

all go for cheap as chips on ebay
