Well, the runabout's MOT is coming up fast now and as some of you know, the steering was leaving alot to be desired. Was really lumpy on turning the wheel, wouldnt self centre after a bend (which became pretty dangerous really!) and also, if you were on a bend and the road surface was bumpy (as most of our roads are nowadays  ) then the car kind of went in another direction!

I knew it wasnt suspension as I changed all of that at xmas so thought it must be the steering rack.

After abit of reading around tho I heard that the universal joint on the steering column could be a problem on the Mk3 which I have never heard before but all of my symptoms were suggested as consequences of this being worn and as they were only £16 as opposed to about £50 for a rack I thought I would try that first.

Did it on Monday and the steering is now perfect, and as a bonus it is now much easier to turn the wheel, feels almost like power steering as a comparison!

If anyone has rough or difficult steering on their fez, change it, its a fairly easy job and its made a massive difference!

Just going to do the track rod ends the weekend after ford fair then its MOT time!

Just thought I would share my strife!

The steering was interesting before, you've ruined it!

40mm drop does make a huge differnece. i had 35mm on my old mk3 then the shocks went and got some second hand shocks with 40mm springs on and just 5mm does make a huge difference i found. looked so so much more lower steering werent muchdifferent but sat lower.

Cheers guys :)

The 40mm drop looks just right imo, handles a million times better now too!

This is now my dads car so he is reaping the benefits of my mods

Was really good when I was driving around in it tho :chill:

Time for a little update on this thread I think :)

After abit of persuasion, my dad has agreed to let me have the car back, so the si is now off the road for the winter, and this is the runabout for the next few months :D

Had started wandering all over the place on bumpy roads, so a couple of weeks back I replaced the front arms and track rod ends, and its fine again now. Instead of using 1.1 items though, I used rs turbo items as these are designed for a lower ride height as standard so the theory is they should last a bit longer than the last set!

Another benefit of using rs turbo items too is that they are a good 10mm longer than 1.1 items, so the front wheels now sit 10mm further out, so fill the arches very nicely indeed! Have spaced the rears out 5mm each side to compensate, so the car is looking pretty good and handling even better now too :D

Also fitted a new pattern part fuel tank, as the original was rusty as fook and about to start leaking out of the breather pipe

Also painted up a mk4 spare wheel carrier I had from my sisters old car and re-fitted the spare under the car (rather than in the boot). The original carrier off the car was rusty as fook

Finally, as a temporary fix over the winter, I sanded the front valence back and put some hammerite on it (same colour as the car) so it looks better for the time being. Will be welding a new front panel on in the spring. Looks loads better for now :)

Oh, and I also changed the oil which is always good
