when turning the key to the crank position, you get the ignition on, but no cranking.
There is no fuel pump sound.
The engine will not turn over.
I am unsure about immobiliser faults as there is no led in the clock (will try that after i get a response here).

We wired the starter directly to +12volts and it spins the engine over nicely.

Fuses all ok.

Theory #1 - Does the fiesta si have an inertia / fuel cut off switch?
IF SO where is it? - Would this cut power to everything (including cranking?) - i get the impression it cuts the power to the main relays (fuel injection relay (ecu power) and fuel pump relay) - in which case the car would not start?

Has anyone had this occur before?

Theory #2 - immobiliser issue - does the engine turn over when theres a faulty key but just not fire? (i assume it would).

theory #3 - what do you think?

cheers dudes
Paul

did it just cut out after going over a hefty bump?

it does have a fuel cutoff... but needs a good bang to make it go off..

may be immobiliser?

check youve got a spark on the plugs and let us know

As "Mouse" said, the fuel cut off switch is behind the passenger kick panel and you press the switch back by sticking your finger in the ole. Once you have done this that will sort out the silent fuel pump because the switch isolates the fuel pump. Second, you say the car has been stood 12mths +, you want to drain the fuel tank and put fresh petrol in as petrol goes stale and loses its ability to ignite. You also want to put a new fuel filter on as the stale petrol will be in that too. Test for a spark by getting a spare spark plug from somewhere and putting it in one of your plug leads and try turning your engine over if you have been able to sort out the cranking problem. You can tell if your car has an immobilister by the ignition key. If it does it should have a red chip in the top of it and all petrol cars on the Mk3.5 have an immobiliser, if you are using a key without the red chip then it either doesn't have one or it is the wrong key and you need to find the one with the chip.

The impact doesn't have to be hard at all and when your mates moved the car, that could have jarred the car enough and popped the switch wich is basically a ball on a spring so it is quite possible that is has broken the circuit. For the time it takes and the effort involved it should be one of the first things you do rather than looking at things that take ages or cost money !!.
