rite i know a little so here we go

firstly does the knocking happen when the cars in neutral at low revs , then this would be a engine issue , what the exact problem could be would be hard to give you an accurate answer , (firstly pop bonnet and rev little see if knockin occuring in neatural if not try following )

check all wheel bearing , but most importantly a knocking noise is more than likely to be coming from the cv joint best bet would be to pull back the cv boot and have a look in and if your able see for any grip also check condition of the boot if it has a tear in it or cracked replace it with a new one and clean out the jooint.
also if you still persist to have the issue i would advice you to go around checking all bolts on mounts on struts of suspension are done up,

as for the rusty looking water bootle this could either be

the radiator is slowly deteriating from the inside and that it will soon give in and start to leak,
this could also be from the fact that the previous owner hasnt used enough antifreeze,

best way to clean bottle and radiator is to release the drain screw and get a hose and flush system all the way through and wait for the water from the drain plug to run clear this would mean that the radiator has been flushed out completely. then fill up and do the screw up allow water to go throught system and add correct amount of the anti freeze.

Cool, the knocking is definatey coming from the exhaust as wen you gove it a shake you can hear it!

As for the rusty water ill just flush the system a few more times get it running clear.

about the exhaust, maybe your cat has collapsed( could be wrong)

gonna say your more than likely right then if the noise is coming from the rear it means the muffler is broken down inside you can always get tht cut out and pipe welded ova > simple way for louder exhaust

if it was the cat , you would notice a very nasty smell of rotten eggs as the reason for cat breaking down means the precious metals inside have been exhausted and theres no more left .
