Post subject: | Power increase recommendation |
Hey folks, As it was a sunny day in Blackpool I thought I'd drive to preston and back First time I drove the SI at speed since I replaced a wheel bearing She only seems to be hitting 80mph as a top speed, all components are standard so just wondered what you'd recommend for it to increase power? I did a service myself but haven't changed the fuel filter so I guess that might help a little, also found out from my mechanic that it's got 10W40 in it, would swapping it out for 5W30 increase the speed/performance? I know the recommended is 5W30, All tyre pressures are 32psi all round Thanks In advance!!!! |

Hi mate, 80mph sounds mighty slow to me!! ![]() ![]() How does she drive up to 80? Is it pulling steady or did it get there real slow? Changing the fuel filter and oil will do no harm and will certainly rule them out! Book speed for the 1.6 was 105mpg or there abouts I think so you should easily get to and past 80 from memory (been a while since I drove mines as a 1.6!) Would be tempted to check the timing isnt out by a tooth as that'll have a big effect! Paul ![]() |

If it's a 1.6 like your profile says and it's only hitting 80, something isn't right. Do a proper good service on it with the correct oil, change all the filters and if you can, get a compression test done too. A standard Si will do 110 without too much hassle. |

Yeah it's a 1.6, not to bad up to 70, gets to 80 in about 2-3 seconds, annoying really, was straight road as it's was on the m55into Blackpool so very little incline, gonna service it and see if that helps, something tells me I'll need to do more than an oil and filter change! |

Definitely do the fuel filter, it can make a massive difference if its clogged!! Did your mechanic say why it has 10W40 in it? Strikes me a as odd that you would put that in for no reason as Zetecs are really fussy over their oil. I stuck 5W40 in mines and I could feel a difference so I would think 10W40 would also make a bigger difference. Paul |

It's the old owner who put it in, he thought the oil was a bit thick and looked in the boot, low and behold half a bottle of 10w40, I read online on the magatex, castrol and ford site recommended is 5w30, halfords says 10w40 but I don't really like halfords knowledge |

Well only usually go in 30/40 areas and can get to speed reasonably fast, seems to pull stronger than my old 1.2! |

My 1.6 si did 115 pretty much with no trouble BUT the cat did collapse and wouldn't go over 55. Or failing that like everyone else said fuel blockage (filter) or timing ![]() Good luck with it ![]() |
