Guys,

I checked my oil yesterday - and it said it was half way up the dipstick level but barely any oil on there so i put some more in - then checked it again - had to push it hard - and it is saying there is none in there? dipstick problem?

there was barely any oil on the dipstick - ie - it only covered 1/4 of it usually the whole dipstick has oil across it's whole width :lol:

Width? As in, about 5mm wide? So only 1.25mm was covered in oil?

Im confused :lol:

You mean it was only a quarter of the way up the dipstick level markings? And after putting more in, it didn't move?

Guys,

I checked my oil yesterday and it appeared a bit low, so I attempted to add some more to top it up to the correct level. However, after checking the level again once the new oil was put in, the level has in fact gone down to the previous reading. Is this a problem with the dipstick, as I did have to push it in quite hard to get the second reading?

but when i checked the oil again on the dipstick it was bone dry

Again, a question regarding your description, and I think this is where the confusion is from: "i checked the oil - it said half way between min + max but there was barely any oil on the dipstick"

Do you mean that you checked the oil and it was on halfway between min and max? Or that somewhere told you it should be between min and max, yet the dipstick was barely covered?

Then after topping up there was none on it whatsoever? All the dipstick does is poke into the sump and reads that, so there may well be a blockage of some kind? Give it a few in/out thrusts

I think what he means is when he pulled the dipstick out tp check the oil there was very little oil on it but for what was on it he could make out it read half way between min and max then to re checkin you struggled to insert the dipstick and then when you pulled it back out it had no oil on it whatsoever despite putting extra oil in?

If thats the case id agree there is a blackage that is wiping the dip stick clean so as said some good old fashioned in and out action is needed, may help to stick a porn tache and medalion on as you do this.

Do as I do with your Mum.

That's:
Park her on the flat,
Prep (wipe),
Plunge,
Withdraw,
Record findings,
Wipe,

Repeat

In all seriousness, I know you're not a twat and know how to check oil, but if there's something not quite right, I'd be worried about driving the car as you have no way of knowing there's enough oil in there.

How much did you put in after checking the first time?
What's the colour of the oil out of interest on the first check?
