Hello, I'm currently on my fourth fiesta and this is the second one that has this, if the steering lock is on and I turn the steering wheel.. like if I use it as a handle to get out the car .. instead of it hitting the steering lock and going solid and not moving, I feel it hit the steering lock and then it's as if the whole steering cowling and stuff moves a bit more with the steering wheel, I haven't had time to investigate this, I assume other people have come across this as I have on a previous fiesta and I was wondering if anyone knows what it is and how to rectify it? Thanks :)

Probably the universal joint that's got play in it - down near the pedals. That'll make the wheel itself move up and down and have play in it.

Hmm I dunno, by steering lock I mean remove the key and the steering wheel locks into position.
someone said to me today it could be that the shear bolts that hold the steering lock and ignition barrel have come loose but I don't even know if mk3 fiestas have them ! :wth: :wth: :wth: :wth:

Sounds to me like someone has broken the steering lock in the past, probably through trying to nick the car!
It sounds like the lock is on but as you turn the wheel the column is flexing and opening where it is broken to let the wheel turn.

Take off the top and bottom black plastic cowlings around the steering column (two screws on top and i think four on the bottom) and then do it again watching for things that don't look right.
If I'm right with the above it'll be blatently obvious what is happening.

In order to fix it you would need a new column surround from the scrappies.
Not am overly difficult job I would think, just lots to undo and put back together.

Talking about someone trying to steal the car they tried on Saturday night now need a new door and steering cowling, however because someone ripped it off for me I could have a better look, basically the steering lock assembly and switches all attach to the steering column tube and its the column tube itself which is moving. If you follow it down it goes through a square silver bracket thing which is held on by two 13mm nuts, if you keep following it down it goes through a metal plate with a plastic sleeve around the tube as it goes through, further down the tube ends and the uj is there, but I can't see where the column tube is supposed to fix to I can only assume that it's the first silver bracket that's held on by the 2 nuts but even then I don't know how to re secure it

Cunts!!! Some people just need their bones broken one by one!!

On the plus side at least you can see a bit more of what's going on.

Typical, after posting on this mines started doing this at the weekend.

My wheel has play forward and back too!! That's how I noticed it, was tanking it along a road and braked hard for a fairly sharp corner and felt the whole wheel move forward as I was putting my weight through it. Is this the same with you guys?

Phil, did you change over the bearing? And did it fix it?
If so where did you get them from?

Paul

I don't think mines is anything to do with the steering lock but I could be wrong (starting to doubt myself as I speak!).

I'll need to have a good look tonight, both my cowlings are off so can have a good gander while wobbling around and see if I can see whats moving that shouldn't...

Replace the steering column outer tube and before you do that check the ignition barrel is on the outer tube properly as they can move
