Afternoon all,

I seem to be going through an unusually large number of rear wheel bearings.
I've had the car for two years now and I have had the change them cause they've worn out twice already, plus once for me installing them wrong, and another cause I changed the rear drums. And, now the drivers side one has worn again. So, in one year (as I changed the first one just before its MOT last year) i've had 4 wheel bearings (not including the ones I did wrong, forgot to spin the wheel when tightening up :banghead: ).

Now is this normal? I'm guessing not, how often have you had to change yours?
Do you use the cheap ones off eBay or proper Ford ones? Does this make a difference?
The car is lowered 35mm on GMax springs, would this have an effect?

Cheers in advance for any responses.

Paul

i've driven 40k on my rear wheels bearings i fitted a few years ago and no sign of any problems in the near future either, i used QH bearings which are good oe quality, what brand are you using? what brand of drums? and how tight do you tighten them? your supposed to tighten them as much as you can really by hand, but i've used a snap on cordless impact gun which can tighten to 400nm and all has been fine, its not a tapered bearing like on a corsa

Hi there,

Thanks for the replies.
I can't remember what brand I used, cheapo cheapo though. Will look for some QH ones as I'm not keen on spending £40 on Ford one!
I'm torqueing it up to what ever the Haynes manual says, 290Nm if memory serves me right.
Paul

You might have worn stub axles causing them to wear out quickly

Yeah, that thought had crossed my mind.
Any ideas where I can find out the limits for the stubs to check them with calipers?

Paul

Are they making a rumbling noise when rotated? Or have play in them when you rock the wheel up and down? Are you packing them out withgood quality grease?
