Hi chaps, today I'm doing my oil filter change and just want to check I'm going to do it right. Get it in axle stands, do I need to run the engine or should it be cold? Remove the sump nut, let it drain, put the engine flush in, do I need to run the engine for a little while here too? Let that drain, put new washer in, tighten up sump nut, how tight or does it not matter? Then fill up until dip stick Reading is okay. Obviously il do the filter after the oil etc has drained, and replace with new with a wee bit of oil on the lip where it s rews in and bobs your uncle. Is that along the right lines guys? Thanks ben

The engine flush usually goes in with the oil before you drain it, so double check that on the bottle!

But otherwise, you're pretty much there. Run the engine so it's warm. Not full operating temp, but a decent temp. You don't want to burn your hands when it comes out the sump, but you don't want it so cold that it doesn't flow out. Let it drain as long as you can. Fit new sump plug and washer if it's there. Tight, but not over tight. Remove the old filter, doubt you'll be able to get it off with your hands, so I hope you have a tool for doing it? If not, you can pierce it with a screwdriver and lever it loose, but that's a horrible, awkward, messy job. It will still have oil in it, and oil will drain from the oil filter thread on the engine.

Fresh oil on the rubber seal on newfilter, and do it up hand tight. Don't go nuts with it, just nicely pinched tight. Some people put oil in the new filter too before fitting, I never have done though. Then fill her up and away you go :)

Oh, and wrong section :) :P

Lol oopsy, sure the mods will sort that! Sorry! Thanks DES, big help. Don't have a new sump plug, just the washer, does that matter? And I don't have anything for the filter lol so I'm guessing it will be a messy one!

You don't need a new sump plug. Make sure you get the old washer off first too, sounds daft, but if it's a copper one, it will be compressed and look like it's part of the plug

I can't remember where the oil filter is on your car, but yeah, could get messy without a tool to do the job. £5 will get you one from a local car shop. I got so fed up of doing them by hand I went and bought one. But it will be a pain with just a screwdriver or something to pierce it. Someone might come up with a novel idea to get it off though :)

And don't worry, I moved it myself, can't rely on our mods for anything in this place

Go the gym and get some muscles built up

Get some kind of breaker bar on it. What are you using to try and get it off? A spanner, or a socket? You just need a bit more leverage to get that first bit of movement.

You ARE going anti-clockwise aren't you?

More torque is the answer, when a nut is too hard 2 spanners does the trick, just link them up.

You could use an old petrol can. They take a little over 5 litres so if you have 4 that'll be fine :)
