I've been looking at getting a slightly newer car than my old 96 mazda, and a saxo VTR is one i'm seriously considering I've seen one which looks nice and in good condition, it was up at just short of £1300 and among emails to the seller(well the seller is the owners dads friend, as the owner is now at uni and his dad works away, so the family friend who is the mechanic and looks after the car, is advertising it.) I asked his lowest price to which he said he couldn't take less than £1100 as I offered him £1k. Before going to view it I thought I would do a HPI check, to which it came back as a VCAR cat D. I queried this to the seller and he said hed just contacted the owner of the car and it did have a slight bump on the front, not even enough to bend the slam panel, cross member or anything, and it really was a light bump. I was still quite keen but i'm been told by members of the saxo forum to stay well clear if its cat D, and that it must of been more serious than hes saying. I do like the car and just wanting to get a few opinions on if it is worth going for or if I really should leave well alone? Cheers |

Cat d means uneconomical to repair ie the cost of repairs would exceed the Market value of the car. I don't know how much vtr's are worth but you should look at it thinking if he wants £1100 for it and it's cat d either there is an excess of £1100 worth of damage or it's over priced, either way I'd look at it very carefully (and personally very skeptically) also a friend of mine told me that with cat d cars if they have another accident there is almost no chance of the insurance company repairing it and it's value will be greatly reduced. Hope this helps ![]() |

I wouldn't touch it, for £1100 I wouldn't class it as a cheap vtr, iv seen loads that price in reasonable condition, even the vts's aren't far off that price. The seller didn't tell you of its past so id suspect it of being worse than he said. |

very well said lou hes probably trying to cover up alot more than what you can see i wouldnt even consider the car tbh i know my si is a cat D but everyone who has seen low-si's project thread when he owned the car will understand why because its only a dent so for someone who is saying its just a bump and was only prepared to tell you about it once you found out of your own back then i dont think its worth viewing as a little bump in a saxo isnt good as there not the strongest of hot hatches ![]() |

for a cat D I'd be looking anywhere between 20% to 40% cheaper than what it would be if it was not registered. So many variables though... |

is it not even worth going to look at then? I understand it as the lad whos car it is is away at uni and his dads friend who has also maintained the car is advertising it for sale, so whether or not he new initially I am not sure. As for the first reply, the cat d marker was back in 2006, the car has been repaired since then and has been on the road for a further 5 years so surely this means something? The seller did tell me that hed had a look over it and there is evidence of the small bump(scuff on bumper and slight dent to corner of bonnet) but there is no damge to the cross member or slam panel? I understand that its not a lot cheaper than others out there, but it does look very well maintained, has a lot of work been done by this mechanic so appears looked after, whereas all other vtrs ive seen that i like have been 4 or 5 hundred more expensive, all the rest have been tatty looking even from the pics. And as for a vts I doubt i could insure one. |

Whats mileage mate? You got any pics? Your miles away but I could be interested as i'd rather buy from someone trustworthy, if the mileage is alright i'll have a list of questions about it for you ![]() |
