Post subject: | Dealing with rust, not rot? |
Basically I have some rust on my car that I wanna sort soon, and thought this would be the best forum for it ![]() ![]() The car has some surface rust underneath, and on the rear arches, but its by no means rot, so I think removing the rust could work if I find out how to do it properly. suspension turrets: ![]() Underside: ![]() Sill: ![]() Subframe: ![]() I'm thinking a good plan of action is to buy some Bilt hamber stuff, attack the rust with a dremel/wire brush wheel on a drill, then add some rust remover stuff(bilt hamber deox), let that work then wash it off, then add some rust converter(bilt hamber hydrate 80) then when thats had a couple of coats and chance to dry put some etch primer on, then after that put on either hammerite for the undercar bits or spray some paint, then lacquer for the arches, then cover the underside bits in hamerite underbody seal with waxoyl. Would this work as long as I take my time and give it all time to cure, as i've done my arches before btu probably rushed it and hence it came back? Cheers |

sounds about right i would take it back to metal then check condition of it prime it with some filler primer bit of paint then underseal/waxoil job should be a good one |

as above grind it back to clean metal (hopefully it has some under the rust) and the prime/paint seal etc. I also used a bit of krust (not sure if its spelt right) on the newly exposed metal just to let it oxidize any remaining traces ![]() |

Yeah there is plenty of clean metal, its just surface really, although I did find a pea sized hole in the boot :/ Also Kurust never seems to work, you are much better with something like Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80. I am however thinking of moving on from this car and getting something a little newer. |

can you not just go over it all with a wirebrush and plaster it in hammerite ? |

If you just do that mate it will most likely come back, better dealing with it properly first time, I did my arches using kurust and it came back, the bilt hamber stuff is meant to be a really good product ![]() As I say though thinking of moving on to a saxo VTR, shame though as I loved how i'd got that car ![]() |
