cheers mate  will i need primer if its just under the boot panelling? Im using some of that anti rust kurust stuff?

I got told by a bodyshop to use seam sealer then go ahead with your painting... Did that in the rear of the Fiesta Pickup and it eventually broke away from the metal. Definately put some paint down first.. I would go for Etch Primer onto bare metal

as above from i know from the trade its use a decent primer first so it can sink into the metal and prevent rusting issues later on in life, then you seam sealer it to lock in the protection that the primer gives. then you can paint over the seam sealer when its fully dry, most bodyshops use seam sealer as a tape version then again some use it from a sealant gun! |

This was just in like a brush on form in a tin? Anyway I went ahead before i'd read the last two replies and put it on before the primer and paint :/ It was just for the inside of the boot though as id removed some of the old stuff to treat a little surface rust so should be okay

did you say you put the sealer on before primer??? matey its the other way round!! otherwise you're gonna have rust issues!! |

hmmm, it was just on the inside of the boot mate? Like as in the interior of the car? When I took the old stuff up it looked like it had been applied before any paint? |

Before paint yeah, but it should go on after some sort of metal primer. Rust can still form under it. Trust me. |

as paul said rust can still occur then as any moisture thats trapped under the seam sealer can hit the bare metal hard and corrosion occurs and will continue on and on, then as soon as you see it on the surface it will be alot worse under the seam! use a strip and clean wheel on a drill to get rid of the seam sealer, then prep area again, clean and degrease use acid etch primer, you can also use zinc primer as well! |
