My engine has been drinking oil like a good 'un, which is why my Fiesta Si is having a 2.0 Mondeo fitted over Christmas.

However, today the 1.6 has started to sound really nasty, and I'm worried the engine is going to seize up before I'm able to drive to where I'm getting the new engine fitted.

I've taken 2 clips on my phone just for the sound. First clip is idling, second clip is revving. They are all under 450kb. Has the top-end gone?

I converted the clips to AVI for those that can't play 3gp. The sound went out of sync with the video though but it's only the sound that's important.

Its hard to say really, sounds like its on its last legs big time. Maybe if you take it really easy and don't go on the motorway lol you might be ok. Judging by the fact you said 200 miles I take it a motorway journey is included in there somewhere? I'd deffo avoid that incase it seizes.

Take the cam cover off.. mine was like that, it was a bit of oil build up that had gon hard and stuck to the cam.. it made that noise because everytime the cam rotated it whacked the other build up lol.

Orrrrrrrrrrrrr, it sounds like the big ends :(

If it is, your engine is about to die a horrible painful death. But it sounds just like my old Fez, which the big ends went on that. Try not to drive it until you go to get your new engine put in, as it isnt going to last long. But if it is the big ends, 200 miles will really be pushing it. Make sure you join up to the RAC if you havent already so they can tow the car there if the worst should happen :)

WHAT A MISSION!!!! :o :o :o

We left Kent at 9:30am (2.0 engine etc in the back) with a view to arriving in Macclesfield around 1:30pm. Because of the obvious engine problem I found that by changing up early and keeping the revs below 2500rpm I could minimise the rattling noise.

So we trundled up (my mate followed in his car) keeping to 50-55mph where possible. I never once went over 3000rpm or 60mph. :insanity:

We got round the M25 okay then hit the M1 and bam, patches of snowfall plus Christmas sale shoppers meant a 90 mile jaunt up the M1 took over 3 hours! After getting off the M1 we made it to the destination at around 4:30pm. Madness! :o

And here is the unbelievable part. I parked up on the driveway and went to blip the throttle to show Paul the noise before switching the engine off, and the engine seized up there and then!!! How lucky was that!!

I was mega relived to have made it there, especially now as I know how so very close to giving up the engine was. 8-)

I dunno, there will always be somewhere that has re-con engines for sale, and even if they haven't you could always get your engine reconditioned. Mine knocks a bit when its cold but the noise dosen't last long, probably just the lifters getting on a bit. As soon as its warmed up a bit tis sweet as a nut :) Uses barely a drop of oil with nearly 103,000 on the clock so if the noise gets worse i'll just have the lifters replaced maybe with a couple of cams for good measure! :D
