Post subject:  My XR2i 1800 Zetec PROBLEM with Idle!

Hi Guys ill try to keep this as short as possible, I had a 2i as a first car and have recently bought a red 1800 zetec xr2i (cheap) in a view of getting it on the road, the body work is pretty mint and welding has been all done, I have no proof but trust the previous owner and the following mods have been carried out...

rs1800 throttle body
KnN filter
Full exhaust and De-cat
Piper Cams

I knew the car had an idle problem and the owner told me i need to get a new idle control valve. I also knew there were NO Brakes.

The car was running so so lumpy / lean and didnt want to idle until it was at normal ish temp. Even then it seemed to miss fire

Since iv had it iv bought the following to try and solve this problem.

New Plugs and Leads (NGK's and triple silicone leads)
Coil Pack Replaced
New Idle Control Valve
New Oil and Oil Filter
New Fuel Pump
MAS Airflow replaced

The problem improved with all of the above but still kicked out potent fumes...

I bought a 130 psi ecu out of an rs1800 thinking it would compliment the CAMS and installed it this weekend, this seems to helped no end and the idling is much better but still miss fires and stinks of petrol, iv smelt in the header tank and no odd smells there so gasket is prob a no no.

I have also got hold of the standard air intake system which i thought might help long term if nothing else..

I tried a compression test too this weekend but the halford piece of shite didnt want to go in / fit so haven't got readings yet.

Sorry this is so long, Im stuck now though and not sure wat this problem could be its running so lean and smells so strong you cant stand behind the car for more than 20secs, the idling is better but still not perfect...

Iv driven the car and apart from a good set up needed it seems ok and pulls well (dont worry all new brakes, even drums and shoes lol)

Please help me...

Maybe because it's got aggressive cams in it and it needs a good rolling road set up

My 2.0 xr2i idle rough as fook because of the cams

What profile are the cams in the yours ??

i have no idea im afraid, i think a set up is deff the way forward i will talk to power engineering.

someone said that it could be the fuel pump and or fuel pressure regulator?

welcome to fsi

is the ecu chipped?if not, you might need to look into getting one to get the full potential out of your cams ;)

as for the miss fire and and stink of fuel, did you try replacing the temp sensor on top of the thermostat? if this goes it causes the car to think its cold and dump shed loads of fuel in

give that a whirl and see how you get on :D

yh mate its more than lieky is your cams is the timing bang in. its nly got to be a fraction out and it can still run lumpy.

The brakes are sorted now are they?

I would personally fit new gaskets (ISCV, TB, Inlet, Inlet sandiwch plastic jobbie) on the inlet side and check the breather pipe under the coilpack, and the pipe which goes from the inlet to the brake servo.

Also, the ECU can make silly things like this happen. Have you got the correct MAF for the 130 spec ecu you are running?

And as also said, it could be down to the cams...

Thank you all for your replies,

Brakes are sorted with brembos on the front and new drums / shoes on the back, plus a full blead and new fluid!

In terms of the 130ps ecu I have installed the correct MAS (130ps) too so they are running together.

I think a set up is really the only thing left all the obvious things have been done, unless its some silly sensor somewhere!

torque of the devil in uxbridge have quoted £90+VAT for a rolling road / set up dignostic.

Just for you all to see, this is a pic of the 2i when I picked her up after passing with £400.00

And this is where we are at now...

Not bad for 400, whats the rott like?

no rott, fuel cap mint, a tiny bbubble of rust imerging from above the rear arch, the cills and that have been done and are solid.

i thought it was a good buy just gone over 100k on the clock but still pretty average miles for age.

Sounds pretty good, I would still rip out the complete interior and check, as all mk3's are worse than they look lol
