Noticed my temperature gauge never seems to move off the black, then tonight when I took it out, it seemed to intermittently jump into the middle and back down into the black...is this likely to be the sender, or wiring?

I've had a problem in an old K plate Escort where it shot up to the red and stayed there, but not had this before...

if it intermittently jumps sounds more like wiring than sensor, there is a way of testing in the haynes manual if i remember by shorting wiring out and gauge should go to top, might be worth a look if you got one.

Cheers, will have a go at that - think I might know what the problem is though, its ridiculously low on coolant, i.e. nothing in the header tank! Don't know how I didnt notice it tbh! Going to drain it and flush it all out and put fresh stuff in, as I reckon the levels probably not touching the sensors or something like that! The car;s had a front end knock at some point, possibly a fucked radiator

ok got all the air out of the system and topped the water up still waiting for the temp valve unit to arrive the heater gets very warm but the question i really want to ask is when the engine gets warm shold the fan kick in to cool the system down even without the temp control valveand there feels like ther is no pressure in header tank when i go to unscrew the cap any help would be appreciated in solving this cheers

i think it maybe time to change a few pipes on this engine and flush the system out completely and hopefully the fan and sensor will work how they should do when new coolant is added im hearing a slight noise from header tank ie like its got and air leak or does any 1 have any better solutions ?????
