There is a guide somewhere - possibly in the guides section. I'll have a look for it.... |

Danny - i've had a look at that guide...i think i need something abit more idiot proof with more pics tbh... Haynes as always is abit long winded. I'm wondering also why you need to remove the driveshaft from the hub? leverage to the remove from gearbox? Lou- how much did it cost? that sounds abit dodgy, did a garage do it? |

pretty expensive at £250, i need to take it back but with works its abit hard. i had been offered to get it changed for £180 as a foriegner but i wanted doin at a garage. its as though the clutch is not adjusting as it wears down so god only knows ![]() |

its not technically hard general mechanical stuff if you follow the haynes manual, but it does take some basic knowledge especially if its your only mode of transport and allow about a day to do it. Drive shaft comes out to allow the gearbox to move across and down to clear the clutch. need a way to support the engine and raise and lower the gearbox back into position, jack or manually. one thing need knowledge or tool to align the clutch plate prior to fitting gearbox or you will be pulling and pushing all day. I ended up replacing two in a month laying on a gravel drive and its not best job in the world. if not confident worth phoning around to get prices including specialist like Mr clutch, bearing in mind £50 for the clutch if you can get one fitted around £150-£180 its a good price. |

i'm sort of confident, and i have plenty of time as car is off the road... reading the haynes and it seems (as typical haynes style) difficult. But it's probably easier and more straightforward when it's all infront of you. How did you align the clutch plate? or were your pushing/pulling all day? |

decided i'm going to go for it. Provisionally anyway. Having plenty of time is pretty key and it can't be harder than doing the headgasket/waterpump/cambelt fiasco i did previously (jesus that was a nightmare). problem might not be the clutch anyway you never know. Needs proper diagnosis first ![]() |

agreed with whats above..allow a day...its not a hard job. just labour intensive. id like to know how a zetec is harder than a normal fiesta. less room my fat arse..10 mins and the airbox is out. and thats about all that sits over the gearbox! if you can do a headgasket andy...a clutch will be a walk in the park ![]() |

Is it easier to lift/crane it out the top or the engine bay or drop it down and out the bottom? Also, if it's the gearbox where's best to get a reconned BC box from on the cheap? not possible i'm guessing! |

ive just jacked the front of the car up on axle stands under the chassis, then supported the engine on a plank of wood and blocks under the sump and dropped the gearbox down, dont think its possible for it come out of the top independant of the engine. As for a replacement gearbox a re-con one wont be cheep, may be better of with a secondhand one from a running car known to be ok |
