fsi 1.6 (m reg) just wondering if this is common, when ever i accelerate i get a noise that can only be described as that it sounds like an electric motor, it get louder as i accelerate and stops when clutch is dipped, sounds like it comes from alternator as the pulley needed greasing up a week or two ago because of a squeeking noise( think it needs a pulley tensioner kit), its driving me mad because it sound like an electric car. thanks,

If its doing it when the clutch is up, it would be the release bearing/thrust bearing.. whatever you want to call it. Can you feel any roughness through the pedal at all? Just engage the clutch very slightly and you will feel it. Other than that, as you say it sounds like the alternator, does the noise clearly come from that side? From what you have described, it does sound like the release bearing. |

if stationary and just ticking over does it do it and stop when you depress the clutch pedel? then could be clutch release bearing, if continues could be alternator bearings or adjuster pully, next thing could temporary remove the alternator belt and see if it stops |

from what ive read about i dont think its the release bearings as it only makes the noise when the car is moving and gets louder as i accelerate. |

does noise go up with engine rev's or increase with road speed, if engine revs check alternator belt or possible air leak making a whistle noise?. if road speed check nothing rubbing against tyres ect, |

sounds like alternator bearing mate as im having the same problem, just this second priced up a new alternator from halfrauds and its £64 |

mine is definately the alternator, you can get them on ebay for 30-35 posted, or its cheaper at your local motor factors then halfrauds. |

clutch release would be the other way round generally as its a push clutch not a pull. check the alternator. take the belt off and spin it by hand check for any roughness or noise..but if its stopping when you push your foot on the clutch..that really would point in the direction of the gearbox....has it got any oil in? |
