| Post subject: | losing coolant |
can any 1 help me with findin out why im losin coolant, if its on max level ,after a week its down to the min, its been like this for about 2-3 months but i just keep filling it up, theres no visible leaks and ive had a really good look around, ive tried 2 caps, theres no smoke out of the exhaust, the oil isnt going cream colour or anything and coolant dont smell like oil, the car runs fine aswell, today i noticed that when i start the car and put the blower on it smells like antifreeze a bit

Heater matrix? tighten all hose clips. |

heater matrix isnt leaking and all the clips are tight aswell, the only thing i think it could be is the cap, even tho ive tried 2, 1 of em i got from scrap yard so that could be dodgy aswell  , ill go get a brand new 1 2mora an try that

Have a good luck at all the hoses mate, and as said check the heater matrix, these can go. If there is no visible leak it is probs just coming out slowly and evaporating with the heat of the engine. get the car warmed up and have a good luck round the engine bay (and also around the heater matrix in the car). just noticed your in Barnsley mate, you fancy coming to the fsi north meet this sunday at 12?

I would check every single hose in the engine bay, one might have a slight leak, i had this problem, one was the bottom rad hose as my gearbox mount had gone. And just recently, on my hcs engine, there is a hose going from the head to the inlet manifold on the back, not sure of they have this is on the 16v engine, i will look at my 16v engine at work tomorrow and find out and tell you if you cant see it. but if it is there, its worth checking out possibly. I had a very minor leak coming from somewhere - minor as in, would go from max to min after a couple of months, i couldnt find it at all for weeks when it started to get slightly worse, thought it was the headgasket, but no smoke, then driving down the road i saw loads of steam coming from the engine, so pulled over, still no sign of any leaks but expansion tank was empty, walked to tesco and got some water, started up and still couldnt see anything.. so i started squeezing the rad hoses while the engine was off, and i could hear a slight air leak.. eventually found where it was coming from - this pipe on the inlet manifold... reason i couldnt see the leak ever was because, it drips directly onto the exhaust, so it evaporates in seconds! The hose had failed due to old age i think, and the jubilie clip had failed too, so got new ones of each.. sorted! Long winded story, but it gets the point across lol
