Ok when I brake from high speed. 70. And if I brake quite hard, ithe car starts to Huddersfield a little especially once I get to 20 downwards. Anyone had this before and know the problem?

When I get out of my car I can smell rubber :S something wrong with tyres or what? Even after a careful drive in the rain I smelt it yesterday. An it can't be sliding itnaround in the dry or anything because I didn't get it before. Ideas?

Also my drivers side two tyres are running low on tread 195/45R I think, any suggestions? Don't want mega expensive overkill tyres, cheaper is better, remember it's just road use my track or drifting :D all my tyres are different and all budget. So I'm thinking.. The 2 budgets best on the front and 2 new ones on the back?

Those are my three problems feel free to answer all/one.

Cheers in advance.

Ahh.. the age old debate of new rubber on the front or back starts again!!

They say to put the most tread on the back wheels in a front wheel drive car so that in the rain you are less likely to lose the back end as you can control the front end with steering and acceleration.
So you should always put new tyres on the back if you are buying two!!

As for tyres, I would recommend Nankang NS2's £38 a corner from MyTyres.com I have them on my Audi A4 and they are great for the money. I've just bought some 15" alloys and will be sticking the Nankangs on them once they've been re-furbed!!

As for your other problems are you sure it's not your brake calipers sticking and the smell is your brakes?
Would try taking the calipers off and get someone to gently brake to see how easy the piston moves in the caliper. Dont go nuts though or you'll pop it out!!

Hope that lot helps

Paul

Yea I've heard of nankangs. If there good then I'll go or them I think replacing them on the drivers side where the two have worn will do, as the other two budgets on the other side are fine at the mo and one is practically new (admiral lol £42 fitted) yesterday driving in the wet was fun. One corner I just touched on some accelaration, and back end came out a bit. Was fun  but isn't something I want happening regularly.

As for brakes I think I will have to a friend to checkP them but that will start us off! Cheers

In Meilacks thread, Toyo Proxies T1-Rs are mentioned. I've had them and they were decent tyres. I paid £50 a corner for 14s so I'd imagine they'd be about £40 for 15"s.

Toyo Proxies are £52 on Mytyres.
Falken ZE-912's £50.

To be honest, I've had Eagle F1's, Toyo Proxies, Pirelli P-Zeros, Dunlop SportMaxx's and the Nankangs on either my A4 or Golf Gti and the best were the Dunlops. But they dont seem to do them in 195/45R15's so I'm choosing what I found was the next best tyre which currently is the Nankangs!
I went straight from Eagle F1's to the Nankangs and noticed no difference what so ever. And when I'm in the Audi I certainly don't take it easy and it is a big heavy fronted car, but it's still great on back roads!!

At the end of the day, buy the best you can afford, but don't automatically think that more expensive = better!! :chill:

Paul

I can second that eagle F1's are amazing and held my 2.0 to the road, I remember when my Saxo snapped a driveshaft and the RAC guy said it was partly down to the amount of grip my tyres had.

As an interest thought, never buy cheap tyres. If you think about it there is only one part of your car in contact with the road.

Eagle f1s seem good price wise.

The only brand I know are toyo and firestone, toyo from
racing games, and firestone from my old si steelies, which my dad said were a good tyre.

There are two types of toyo, and two types of firestone, the fuel saver firestone attracted me, but im guessing they will look different? And probably that would mean look worse.

Now if you guys think that the eagles will be better or just as good, or from experience know they are just as good/good enough.

I mean, if they've stuck your 2.0 to the ground Percy maybe I should just go for eagles . Hmmm. What a debate.

And now I've been on black circles and they sell toyo and yokoholma (whatever there called) fitted for £7 than the firestone which aren't fitted balanced etc. And there's a couple blackcircle shop right next to me, so that seems the better deal. So which would you reccomend?

your braking issue is most likely buggered discs. well, warped or distorted technically. std discs and pads for pattern comes in about 30 quid for both discs and a set of pads. check your wishbone bushes for signs of splits etc. but beware most are only visible when the cars on its wheels. ramps will do to check them.

hope that helps

Jam.

The biggest problem is not many people can speak for all the options, I can whole heartedly say get the eagle f1s and you will be very happy with them. But with that I am sure there is other great tyres I haven't tried.

Cheers all,

my engine has a big hole in it now. So least of my worries is tyres and brakes.
