Can someone tell me how you change gear ratios in a 1.4 si. Is it an easy DIY thing or is it more advanced than that? I feel so dumb, but hopefully one of you will have the patience to tell me thanks.

To change the ratios would be pointless mainly de to the expense.

I'd take a leaf out of others books, and change the box for another compatable one from a different engined Fiesta/Escort.

I've made several attempts on here to get the ratios of several boxes so as to do some proper in gear speed number crunching, but to no avail.


What are you after?? A closer set of ratios or a box with a longer top gear etc.

i didn't say the 1.6 was revvy either

cvhs aren't generally revvy though

also i think the cvh max power things are bollocks

on the xr3i, max power was apparantly at 6000rpm, which was bollocks as above 5000rpm you could feel it tail off and just make a noise

This is something that's been annoying me.....my 1st gear goes on forever !! I get beaten by 1.3 fiesta's off the lights and it's emmbarressing lol makes me wanna say " oh yer it's an xr2i rep pmsl "

so is the 1.4 gearbox ratios different from the 1.6? (probably a thick question but i dont have a clue lol)

Dunno really, The 1.4 just runs out of puff alot quicker and once your at 60-70 your stuck for anymore overtaking power or anything, ratios could be the same? no idea. But the engines obviously have different powers and valves. Which make a huge difference.
When i was talking about this up there I said about my mates corsa, turns out to be the 1,4 88BHP 16v, So of course it was quick, was as quick as my 1.6.

I've no real idea about ratios, i just know what speed the 1.6 did in 1st and 2nd lol not sure on the 1.4 as I changed about 5000rpm MAX barely revved it as it was so slow and the engine was so old.

just wondering as it widens my field on the look out for a gearbox, i dont really want to try a different box other than standard.

Pretty sure you've been told but the only real reason to change would be for a escort LSD box. unless you wanted to have a 1.1 like Paul did you change gear alot but im sure its pretty brutal

my box is broke so iv no choice, you cringe everytime you push the accelerator too hard lol
