I guess you could test if the clutch is going by cruising at 30mph, putting it into 5th and flooring it. If the revs rise quickly but not the engine speed then the clutch needs chasing.

Let's hope it's not the gearbox!

Possible problems:
Gear selector is worn
Syncro is going on the gearbox
Clutch isnt engaging fully
Gearbox mount is going

If the gearbox goes it's not that much of a pain or expense. 'Box will cost you around ?40-50 and means you can slap a new clutch in it too to give you peace of mind. Mines doing a similar thing, but I know my gearbox mount is knackered, which costs about ?3 :lol:

See if any other symptoms develop.

Ah cheers Scotty, I've had a squeak when i change gear for ages and i thought it was a mounting, would be happy if thats all it is! What I am worried about is wether the Si has different ratios to the normal IB5 box? If thats the case I cant just find any old fiesta/escort in a wreckers can i

Is there a definate way to know wether a mounting is knackered? Not only have I got a squeak, the gearstick wobbles about quite a bit when im driving along, notice it more on the motorway tho.

Its not too bad to drive, if it wont take 3rd ive just been going straight to 4th, but I think ill drop it round at a garage 2moro morning anyway.

Well its behaved all day today, only did it once when I was trying to shift down from 4th to 3rd. Didn't take it to a garage, decided to see how it goes but I'll start looking for a replacement. For the time being im gonna change the oil and whack some of this "molyslip gearbox" stuff in that we sell at my work...everyone that uses it says it works wonders n its only cheap so ill see how it goes.

i have same problem going in to reverse.... IT doesnt go all the way in so i have to knock it back into neutral then it goes in ok...

There's no syncro on the reverse so they never go in right
