Only sometimes

when i apply my foot to the brake pedal the handbrake light flickers and a horrible grinding noise appears from the brakes ?

Can someone help me please?

Have you checked your pads and shoes? Being as the handbrake light comes on, I'd be inclined to check the shoes first, sounds like they've run out of pad material :)
