Hi peeps,

i'm having a little trouble with the car (as usual),
firstly i get strong random fuel smell when i come to a stop or drive in slow traffic
i've checked fuel lines swapped injector rails tried disconnecting maf, etc..
all the common things, i even checked the sandwich plate and manifold gaskets both were replaced when i did the cylinder head.

secondly and most bizarre, even though i am getting strong fuel smell the plugs are coming out whitish, indicating the car is running lean,

i've tried different throttle position sensors temperature sensors, disconnecting the maf, regapping and replacing the spark plugs, replacing the lambda.

basically all sensors on the car have been check and replaced if necessary, (at least i think i have checked them all)

what i really want to do is plug in a diagnostic tool and read the ECU codes,
however my early Fiesta SI doesn't have the plug in the passenger foot well like the later models.

does anyone know the name of the connector that goes straight into the ecu onto the circuit board
Which i might be able to buy/hire from somewhere and diagnose the problems,

alternatively a wiring diagram to install the connector :D

Thanks

=]

(on another note, all this started happening when the cam belt broke at low speed lightly damaging a couple of valves but the car was still very drivable, i figured changing the cylinder head for one i rebuilt with new valves, seals and cams should have fixed this problem as initially i thought the damaged valves were the problem, but the problem wasnt fixed and all i've achieved is better compression.... argh)

The fiestas dont have diagnostics in the footwell.

There should be 3 or 4 plugs on the inner wing next to the washer fluid bottle behind the headlight, they are what is used for plugging the diagnostics into ;)

Although only basic, but will tell you if a sensor is chuffed.

Hmm thats abit odd really, as my RS1800 was part of the last MK3.5 models made, and it had every optional extra (non cosmetic wise) and doesnt have a port like that.

I think its only use for a diagnostics machine.. you can get something from halfords that plugs into them and it will flash a series of lights at you, you count them and then work out the number its telling you.. then look on a list and it will say whats up.

I got mine checked out on a machine for free by some bloke.. garages seem to charge around £50 a pop around here to use the diag machine.

its odd, i've checked a few fiesta si's and rs1800's and i've only ever seen the port in my friends one, (unfortunately we scrapped it without realising it was a gold mine of spares :(,

I spend allot of time in halfords (about 22.5 hours a week to be precise) i know there are one or 2 diagnostic tools, but i didn't think one would fit the fiesta,

i'll investigate these plugs and see what i can find,

cheers :)

i've ordered my 3 pin ecu reader tool thing, so we'll see what it has to say,

i'm interested in what it has to say about the air bag, or lack of :)

Sorry to bring up an old post, I found the problem in the end, where I had removed the egr pulse system I had left a fuel tank breather pipe hanging around near the heater blower so that's where the smell was conning from. As the fuel tank was warming up the vapour was wafting in, also the car was running lean due to a faulty superchip haha damn car
