Post subject:  help please engine seems stiff

have a slight problem after putting engine in the car and would like some help on this

when the engine was out on the crane we turned the engine over by the crank pulley and it was fine had nice compression and was smooth, after fitting the engine we tried to start it but it wouldnt turn over, so we went try and turn the crank pulley again and the engine was really tight, so we took out the spark plugs and the engine would turn over but was still tight

could anyone know what the problem is at all and maybe a way of knowing what to do

we have poured oil down into bore and brake cleaner aswell this helped it out a bit any more idea would be nice

i have put it in my project bit aswell but thought i would make new thread to thanks in advance

I don't run the plate in-between the g/box and engine,
and my engine turns over okay?
very unusual.
has anything dropped down behind the cam belt casing like a bolt or tool?
the starter motor is pretty strong and would probably break anything wedged.
is it wedged in both directions?
or just very stiff all round?

stiff in both directions it turned over fine when we put it in but as soon as it went in and bolted up it didnt go round and got stuck with plugs in take the plugs out its spins but not as much as its ment to

we didnt put the cam cover back on and nothing stuck as we took the belt off and back on again my mate who is doing this with me and a machanic hasnt got a clue he said he never seen this before or anything

very odd, had the engine been sitting around a while?
i'm guessing its in the car now?

its weird how it has become stiff after you fitted it,
it could be the g/box? have you tried taking the gearbox off and turn the engine over by hand with no plugs fitted?
have you used standard clutch and pressure plate?
Its quite hard to work out what it could be without seeing it.
Might be worth taking the engine out again and check it over, check the g/box as well (allot of effort though especially if your short for time, but the days are longer now :D).
Without the plugs in the engine should turn over relatively easy with an 18mm crank spanner on the crank pulley bolt.
i'm guessing the timing is okay, if the timing is off you could be trying to turn the engine over against an open valve. generally not a good thing to do, however unlikely but the imagination wanders when you cant see what your trying to diagnose
