My 2i 8v has loads of play in the steering wheel, as in, if im driving i can turn the steering wheel left and right quite a bit before it actually starts turning! And the steering wheel feels very light in the 'play' area until the wheels actually start to turn. I was thinking steering rack, but it only had one of these a few years ago? |

may sound silly but have you checked if the steering wheel is tight had same problem after last track day and the nut holding the steering wheel on hade come loose! if not start from the steering wheel and work down the steering column joints to rack and then track rod ends by moving the steering wheel and looking for slack movement |

could be the steering uj (union joint), that connects the steering rack to the steering column |

well jus took off the union joint n i think its knackered to say the least! there is loads of play in it, looks like its about to snap soon. Still wonder if this small part can cause so much play in steering wheel? Also front O/S wheel rocks about LOADS in every direction so i reckon the bearings have gone on this as lower arm doesnt look so bad. N/S wheel is fine, no movement at all. |
