just had another look and that whole is acctually fairly irrelevant- thats just where the oil ran too. seems to be near the back of the sump, near the sump plug? |

virtually right above the sump plug is the oil pressure switch. this is a fave for leaks..might also be the sump gasket..but see where its the wettest..if its all gooey around the switch its most likely that Jam. |

Have you checked that the sump plug is tight and sealed and that the oil filter is also tight! ![]() |

common places for zetecs to leak are sump gasket, oil pressure switch, crank seal (cambelt end) and oil pump although most cars had the modified oil pump gasket so oil pump is not so common as when the cars first came out. your best bet it buy a can of brake cleaner, jack the car up drench it in brake cleaner, clean it all up with papre towels/rags run the car and lie underneath with a torch. oh but wear some safety glasses as oil drip straight in the eye i assure you is not a pleasant experience! about as bad as petrol in the eye but it doenst come out with just blinking you have to get the eye wash out! lol |

Update on this, i've checked the pressure switch ('L' shaped piece with a wire coming from it) and it seems fine.... oil filter also seems fine. it's using a small about of oil now, going to top it up now. also going to make sure its not the plug, if it isn't then i think maybe it could be the sump gasket, or sump plug seal? atleast thats what im hoping if its the oil pump i serious cba ![]() |

Post subject: | Re: Update on Oil Leak |
just think i've found the problem, seems to be running from the oil pump pulley, as there was a big drip on the bottom of it, so i assume its run down the side, to the bottom, and back to the sump plug........ super! ![]() |

Post subject: | Re: Update on Oil Leak |
its not actually that hard to do the oil pump, just time consuming to be honest, take the crank pulley off, clean the whole area and run the engine just for 2 mins and see if you can pinpoint exactly where it leaking from, if its just a tiny bit thats leaking past the gasket you may get away with some sikaflex over it, its not a huge leak or it would have run dry of oil bedcause of the pump so do some more investigating before thinking the worst and throwing the towel in mate. just think when its all over youl think back and laugh, well its what i always seem to do! |

oo i didnt think back and laugh last time i had a crack at something like this (though i did bite of more than i could chew - head/cambelt/waterpump)... i didn't enjoy that to be honest, and i can remeber the space between the pulleys and chassis leg being verrry limited... enough so i had trouble and had to jig about with the engine mounts... to be honest think its time for a power upgrade anyway ![]() |

Post subject: | Re: Update on Oil Leak |
just take the engine mounts off and support the engine with a trolley jack and a block of wood so not to damage the sump and lower it down to give you more acess. its definatly not a "do in a mornin" job if youve never done it before but we all have to learn somehow! bigger engine is always best though lol but why dont you rebuild it before you put it all in, will give you a chance to learn your engine and you also know everything is in tip top condition so you have no worries of it breaking. |

i would do that, but haven't got the room for the engine... i know the zetec engine pretty well as i've stripped one before, but it was a long time ago ![]() ![]() ![]() |
