Hey! I'm having troubles with my alternator. When you first start the engine, the alternator works and charges the battery at 13.8V but then after about ten minutes, it stops charging the battery and from then on it comes on and off randomly. Does anyone know what this may be or does anyone else have the same problem? Its a 1.6 engine and the alternator and battery are both new. Cheers. |

You checked all the wires going to it? If not it could be a faulty Alternator, take it back and get another! ![]() |

Update: I've taken the alternator to a specialist to look at and they have said there is absolutely nothing wrong with it! I'm totally stuck now! Could it be the engine management system? Has anyone else ever had this problem? help! ![]() |

Belt is new and alternator is deffo the right one and is a good make too so the only thing I can think of is engine management but I didn't think it had any part to play with the alternator. Its wierd coz the thing starts off fine, then after about 5-10 mins starts cutting off and only charging the battery every so often, meaning the battery is going flat after about 70 miles! ![]() |

Check the main power cable, could be split, or not tighten up properly at either alternator or battery. I had the same problem a while ago. |

Id guess at a dodgy earth or summit somewhere, must be a loose wire. |

Cheers for the help ppl! It turned out that it was a faulty alternator. I got one from a scrapyard on Saturday and fitted it just to check if it was a fault with the alternator or not and the scrappy one works fine!! Cant believe it, you pay loads of money for a new alternator then end up running the car on a cheapie from a scrapyard coz the new one dusn't work! Typical! ![]() |
