Post subject:  2 litre clutch problems

Ive now got through another clutch in about 500 track day miles, just wondering what clutch’s people are using or whether this is a usual occurrence? I must admit Ive abused for two track days and 4 rolling road sessions but want something to last a bit longer! any suggestions??

for near on 2 yrs( since the 2.0 went in) i've had a standard clutch on mine, i do give it some stick but nothing to aggressive so might explain why its lasted so long?!

recently moved onto a black diamond clutch all seems well, still no launching etc  :red:

You got home ok today then?

Advancing the ignition on the Golf solved the "pinking" problem and it finished the last session of the day wihout over-heating.

As I said today you could go for something like an AP racing paddle clutch as it would be good if you wanted even more power, the only problem is I think their fairly pricey!

500 miles for a clutch, track day or not is stupidly low. Are you bedding the clutch in properly when it's first fitted? Or just ragging the shit out of it from day one?

Don’t know what the exact problem is yet until take gearbox out tomorrow, its basically locked up and wont disengage the friction plate even though arm moving properly, its not adjustment either as Ive had it from full adjustment and some! its bedded in ok but must admit it has got abused from quick gear changes up and down box 10 time/lap ova 100 laps, alternative may be to take it easier but when you have a TVR just in from and a lotus eliese behind you where’s the fun in that!!.

got the gearbox oout again today and a chunk of the friction plate has fell apart, feed up with taking it now so doubled the value of the car and ordered a AP Chutch kit!!

So it's continuing to eat clutches

Should be way better with the AP in there mate, personally I think its because it's
only a 1.6 clutch and gearbox and just isn't designed for it, but obviously a tracked car's
clutch won't last as long.

Best of luck with it mate

Hi emlyn.

yes still getting through clutches, hopefully after spending this much on one this time it will last!! had it on the rolling road again with de-cat and filter up to 133bhp and 142lb/ft torque but at lower revs which while more poke isnt as good top end on long straight at snetterton, so back on with cat on complete manifold but didnt like the look of trying to shift the rusty manifold nuts as didnt want to snap them off!! hope BMW still doing ok

Thats a good power increase 8-)

Yeah, that manifold was on the engine when I bought it, and the bolts looked
pretty rusted on then.

Yeah BMW is going fine thanks, getting bored with it though so will be getting a hot hatch before too long
