sometimes in first and second gear around the 3000-4000rpm mark i seem to get flat spots, where the revvs keep goin up but the car doesnt seem to go any faster, only some times though, any ideas any one?

the zetecs do have a slight flat spot of power around them revs sometimes

your clutch might be slipping slightly?

the car could be running very lean check the plugs if there white theres a fuelling problem could be blocked injector

Surprised it's not been mentioned yet, but could simply be a filthy MAF sensor needing a clean. there's a guid on the forums somewhere (FAQ's I think) It takes about two minutes and is practically free (as long as you've got the right Torx bits to remove it).

I'ts a well known cause of a flat spot around 3-4K rpm, most noticeable in low gears as revs rise quicker.
