So I was kind of on the right track when I asked you if your sump was nice and clean on Sunday The sump itself was clean, just not the plug at the back which is usually hard to see

I dont think a sump plug leak will be the cause of this in all honesty. I think as Danny has suggested, to measure the dipstick against a standard one will be a good start so you know what you've got. If it's been adjusted to take into account the increased oil requirements, going by a standard zetec fill amount will be wrong.

Adam - regardless of there being a leak, you should be getting consistent readings on the dipstick. I have an oil leak at the mo, but the oil just gradually drops, doesn't show up then disappear from the dipstick. The way you (somehow) describe the issue seems to be that it's random as to how much and when it shows up on the dipstick. If yours has been shortened, in order to allow for the extra oil needed for the turbo, then obviously the standard amount of oil isn't enough. Get it measured, then we'll know where you stand. Then you can drop the oil, fill it back up with the full amount required for a standard zetec and see if it shows up. If not, keep going until you then reach the desired level, keeping track of what extra you have to put in to get it to register

It is assumed that you require more oil than a standard zetec as you now have oil lines etc for the turbo which need filling to function properly, and as such the standard dipstick marks for min and max are no longer appropriate for the quantity of oil you need.
This would tie in with you having a shortened dipstick to move the markings up inside the sump therefore showing minimum oil at a larger volume than standard. As such comparing to any other dipstick is pointless IMO.
What you need to know is what is the minimum amount of oil required for your engine and then check that your dipstick shows this volume at or near the minimum mark.
Remeber when checking oil that the first time you take the dipstick out means nothing as oil will have run down the dipstick during use/sitting and is why you wipe then measure so it sonds to me like you have no where near enough oil for what your engine needs (as long as the disptick has been calibrated correctly for the quantity of oil needed!).

Agreed, although I don't think it's pointless comparing it to another dipstick, it will at least allow him to see if it has been shortened and then go on and refill up to what's needed
