Also check the connections and the earths. What you've described is a normally functioning unit but something is getting in the way, so check battery power (as mentioned before) and then check wiring, even unplugging connections and putting them straight back with maybe a clean of the pins.

so i went out the car wouldnt start,hooked up other car
and it fired up..great.
so i took her a wee drive and whenever i "put the foot down" and it started to build up
speed and about 2500revs it stutters really bad it stalls and the revs die. sometimes it kicks itself straight back running but the rev counter stays down and then kicks in a few seconds later.
there is a slight blow in the exhaust but dont think it
could be that......could it??

Not the exhaust, looks like a battery or alternator issue, or even a severe connection problem, get the charging rate and battery tested for free at any halfords store or local garage

Yeah you have a busted alternator for sure. There may also be corroded mains wires as well. Don't count this as a PATS issue, it's an alternator, battery, wiring problem.

the battery light doesnt show on the dash when its running? last night when the car was running when i had the lights on and i was revving slightly the lights dipped alot? what wires do uou guys think it could be?

i would still have you alternator and battery checked properly, would rule out a few things instantly and would cost nothing to have it checked, i would never rely on a battery light
