hmmmmm when was the last time it had things changed..plugs leads etc? have you had any manifold bits off..the only thiing that made me say inlet temp sensor is..thinks the air pasing it is too cold..it will enrich the mix.. silly question..have you been out for a long drive in it..mixed roads since you reset it...like 30-40 miles?

No i've not had a good drive in it...i do 2 sets of 9 miles per day... perhaps it would be a good idea for me to have a long drive in it?
Plugs/leads are fairly new...as in last year sometime (sub 10k ago).
I've had the inlet manifold off some time ago....
Just going back to the PCV - it is was blocked i presume it would smoke, but if the hose going to inlet was perished???
My minds a blur with it all now :lolz:
Cheers for the help
andy

id try to include a road where you can give it some beans..and one where you can give it a steady cruise. 20-30 miles in one sitting should do it. try resetting it again before you go. so it starts its relearn process afresh

leads can and do perish with age..but that would have been more of a constant missing rather than hunting, as for the breather...on the 1.6 and 1.8 im 99 percent sure there are only 2 bits of rubber on it. one at each elbow the rest is a metal pipe.

without playing with it its about as much as i can think of at the mo, good luck...post back how you get on :)

Righteo...
Decided to get a vid of it...
i'm going to service it shortly using correct oil but heres a video of the idling.

As above, this is when the car has been stood for 3-4hours, i've just turned it on, not touching the throttle or anything.
If you drive for a few mins, or leave it warm up it will idle bang on 900rpm without any of this pissing about:

TURN VOLUME UP, it's really quiet for some reason...

Anyone ever seen this before?

Have you checked your MAF?

-Like damaged wires/connections or if there is an air leak further up like between the inlet manifold and the MAF

Wires for MAF seem ok, i've unplugged it and let it idle and it did exactly the same.....
Not that i've ever had any sucess by unplugging sensors to help diagnose.
I think this must be a new one/innate to my car...don't think i can find anyone else with the same problem...

Lou - it's when its cold, or just turned on... but it will do it for a good minute or two before it settles and it never used to do this, only apparently past couple of months...

Terry - I could give it a quick clean...one of the last things i intend on doing purely because of the gasket though... Plus, if it was ISCV, i'd have thought it'd be worse hot/all the time??

Today i've:

Unplugged MAF and let idle - no change
Unplugged IAT sensor and let idle - no change in the 'pulsing', rev's were marginally higher though interestingly.
Unplugged Coolant temp sensor - no change
Unplugged ISCV - won't even start :lolz:

I'm going to continue unplugging thinks and checking for air leaks...
servicing at the weekend, i'm wondering if a small amount of gunk in the coilpack could be causing this...i've never known iginition problems to do this though.

Thanks for the help so far all

Andy

i think we may have found the problem today...
after servicing the engine fully, putting correct oil in it, i decided to examine the spark plugs.

1,2,4 were all white but slightly darkening (they were fairly new, but still could be running lean)
no 3 however was completely white, barely any darkening. While it was in my hand the plastic coating around it all cracked and fell off.

to accompany this evidence as we drained the fuel system (took fuel pump fuse out, turned over till it cut out) to do the fuel filter we noticed a impromt fire on cylinder 3...it's like when you try turning your car over without petrol and it won't start but with a random noise per turn over.
My brother thinks it's low compression on cylinder 3 (viable, after looking the cylinder 3's spark plug).
This has probably been caused by one of two things
1- Cylinder head I bought had sticky valves already
2- Using wrong oil for around a year, maybe two.

I'm going to get a compression test equipment to make sure.
I don't know what to do if changing the oil doesn't fix it...are there any addivites to help your valves?
lol

good work andy,

least you might have found the cause to your issues!

i'd get the compression test done and all is well d your service, plugs, leads, fuel filter and new oil and see how it goes from there

i think there is something you can use for sticky valves but i'm not too sure what it is :red:
