I started it when I got home from work and it doesnt seem to be missing now but the problem of the exhaust popping and farting like in the videos is still there and also it stinks of fuel both in the engine bay and at the exhaust

What could cause this ?

I have taken the battery off to reset the ECU, I have left it for 30 minutes to reset it, is that long enough ?

I went to clean the MAF but I dont have the security Torx bit to open it up, I only have the standard Torx bits which wont go over the little lump in the middle of the screw

I have unplugged the lambda and also when it was running I unplugged the MAF and the engine note didnt change and it still had the smell of fuel

I really dont know what else to try next, any ideas ?

Here is another video from it running tonight

This is with the lambda unplugged but with the MAF plugged in

It no longer seems to be missing but is overfuelling badly, the smell is apparent from the engine bay and also from the exhaust



This is it running after having the battery unplugged for 45 minutes and letting it run for 10 minutes to allow for the ECU to relearn the values. At one point the popping had completely gone for a minute or so early on after starting it but it soon returned

Any ideas what to try next ?

Overfueling would point to the coolant temp sensor.Have you checked/changed it

Hey buddy, kinda gay to here you not having the best of luck. However I do think your barking up the wrong tree 100%

The popping is the exhaust not the engine! Take a video of the engine and you will see its not a mis fire and not misfiring, if it was it would be very juddery through rev range. The exhaust has always had a strange pop to it.

Cutting out wise, Terry may be right with the temp sender however these engines also prone to ICV problems. Take it off and clean the crap out of it with brake fluid/petrol/injection cleaner etc etc to remove the carbon and dirt build up and refit.

Also the down pipe does still has a Lamba sensor on, it would be stupid to remove that. Sorry to here your not happy with the decat...but don't see how its a bodge, its a standard downpipe with cat cut out and pipe fully welded in its place. :?

Is the smell of fuel burnt or unburnt? You need the sensors plugged in to make sure she aint over fuelling. hope you sort it.

With the coolant temp sensor unplugged it would read down in the minus temps so shoving move fuel in. The measure in resistance, so if you can find out its range then you can test it like that

MY car sounded like that when the super-chip packed up, unplugged it and run like a gem again only less torque lol,

once i've tried the usual spark and fuel tests i get the old engine compressions tester out and check the valves, head gasket and rings are still sealing :D
