i thought i was almost there for my 2L conversion :D , i asked a question about a clutch and someone mentioned getting a RS1800 gearbox and clutch because they are will handle the power better etc...

So now im not sure if i should stick with my 1.6 gearbox and clutch...

Just after some peoples opinions who have used either the RS1800 or the 1.6 Gearbox and clutch, how long did the clutch last etc etc...

:FSI:

rob i had a 1.6 box on my fez for ages and.... the same clutch that was on my 1.6 engine went back on when bill and i did the 2.0 conversion!

it lasted a while, no one could understand why mine lasted so long and i dont know why it did

i think it was because i didnt launch it at all :red: :homo:

imo if you can find one, i'd get a S2 box and use a black diamond clutch thats what baz uses on his S2 and thats lasted a while with his driving style :lolz:

i'm not 100% if the S2 clutch is the same size as the fez one, if its 220mm like the black diamond one i got then i presume you'll be fine

after a quick search on google it seems like the RST clutches are 220mm.

so would this be better then a RS1800 GB & Clutch?

wanna keep it cheapish but i want it to be half decent lol

im using still using the 1.6 gear box and ratios seem bit short but good acceleration and has hit 132mph at 7200rpm, as for clutch i got through two cheap clutches in a 1000miles of hard track day use so would go for a half decent one, im sure RS one should fit.

well i do a little bit of motoray driving but im not going to be doing stupid speeds (i like having a licence) but i dont want to be cruising along revving the tits off it just to do 100.

id like to have acceleration more then top end tho.

i think i should just keep the 1.6 gearbox and find a decent clutch but would that last???

sorry for all the questions :red:

My 2.0 was fine ont he 1.6 box and clutch, swapped for a black diamond clutch when it was being rebuilt for the fun of it.

Best clutch is the Black diamond DPC 8002 (220mm) because it has quick responce and can easily handle the power
And the ERST S2 gearbox is the best because it has LSD and can hold the power.

But they can be quite expensive depending on the condition - i don't think you can get those gearboxes new any more (I bought one for £125 inc. 2 seats and delivery; depending on if the guy can bring them or not)
And the cheapest i know for the clutch is £114

Si clutch is the same as the rs1800 one. It will handle a standard 2.0 fine.

If you launch any clutch over and over it will break. How ever getting a uprated clutch is a good idea if you plan on ragging around.

RS/diesel boxes are no stronger, they all have the same bearings, its the later boxs from escorts have slightly stronger bearings. The chances are that a diesel/rs box will have been looked after more, thefore last longer in the long run.

The ERST S2 box is a good choice. LSD, which makes a noticable difference while pulling round corners. And the ratios are good for acceleration but good enough for motorway/speed.

is it worth changing my rs1800 gearbox for a derv gearbox to try and save fuel as i have read somewhere 5th is better for motorways as it better ratio for fuel economy but dont really want to mess with first 4 gears as they fine and how easy would it be to fit the lsd from the erst into the derv box
