does it start good if not change the glow plugs,
are you using a lot of oil or is there oil in the intercooler coz there known for it

it sounds like apossible injection pump or injector faulty



also common on the escort ( i no its a mondeo) is the filter housings suck air and run pants on idle and when reved ok and also causes to smoke

if it starts funny could possibly be a pipe. . etc sucking air (it doesnt take much)
glow plugs altho it doesnt use them to run only start up from cold if you get stuck give me a pm mate
