Maybe a stupid question, but you know with old cars, like Minis/metros things like that, you can always smell unburnt fuel vapours from them?

Well this is the last technical post ill make for a while, because after this im just going to accept that my car is gay.

My Si is weird, its a 2.0 so from the red on the petrol guage, i put in say 5.00 worth @ 96.9p a litre, regular unleaded, the guage will go up to just over the quarter line mark, and i mainly drive round town, long blasts and back down the carriageway to local meets, and ill get around 25 - 30 miles before im back touchng the red again.

The odd thing is when i put in 10.00 from the same fuel station at the same price, and the guage still only goes up to just past the quarter mark, ive put a tenner in this time, NOT a fiver, so why the hell doesnt it go further than the quarter mark? I will get around 50 miles before i get the the top of the red again.

If i put in 20.00, i will get just over the half way mark, same garage, same driving, and i will get just over 100 - 110 miles on this, maybe 90 - 95 if i rag it about.

Now the weird thing, i filled it to the brim Thursday night, and this morning 2 days later, its back touching the halfway mark, and ive only done 66, yes SIXTY SIX miles, thats sixty six miles on half a tank.

Someone explain to me why if i put in 20.00 and fill it up to the halfway mark from the red line ill get 100 miles on average, but if i fill it up @ the cost of 35.00 ill only get 66 miles from the full marker down to the half marker?

Anyone see where this is going? This is also why i can and never have got more than 160 miles to a tank on my Si, when it was a 1600 and now its a 2.0 ?

It does seem to always hum of fuel vapours, the fuel filter is quite old but doesnt appear to be leaking, the fuel lines are fine and are on as they should be. the fuel sometimes leaks back out the fuel cap when i boot it round the corners?

Ive been under the car a few times and i cannot see any visible leaks on the tank?

Its really pissing me off and always has done since ive owned it

Change the fuel filter, doesn't matter that it's not leaking, it may not be doing it's job properly. Mine is the same, hardly getting any miles to a tank, so I've bought a filter to stick on.
