Afternoon all,

Right, since I had the Fiesta (even with the 1.6 in it) it has always run a tad hot in my opinion.
For example, if I sit in traffic the needle will head up past the O in Norm and the cooling fan will come on, it will do it quite quickly but will then come down and the fan will go off. This will repeat until you either switch the engine off or get it up to a decent speed.

When on the Dual carraigeway it'll sit in between the O and the R and looks ok, i'm just a bit worried about it when its not sitting at 70.

To add to this, I've now got my oil temp gauge in and I had a "spirited" run for around 30 miles at the weekend and the oil temp peaked at 110-115 degrees and when I was sat at idle, the pressure dropped down to practically nothing as (i assume) the oil was so bloody thin at that temp!

When I put the 2.0 in I changed the water pump for a new Fiesta one and it has had the coolant changed a number of times due to one reason or another.
I do have another pump, but am loathed to change it if its not going to fix things!

Can anyone confirm if they have a similar scenario to the above and I am being a tit or does this just not sound right? The only thing I can think is if the radiator has a few blockages that are stopping it working fully as water passes through it no bother.

If it's sitting in the middle of everything, the fan comes on when in traffic, and goes off when cool enough, then it all sounds like everything is doing it's job.

The fan is kicking in at the right time, mine kicks in then too, never had a problem with overheating with the 1.6 or 2.0 engine.

Might be worth you looking at your oil though if your pressure is dropping at higher temps. What are you using?

Yeah, that is my next concern.
I've got Halfords 5W-30 Part Synth IIRC.

It's due a change so was looking at what to change it to, anyone got any suggestions? I was tempted to give the Millers Nanodrive a whirl after the Fast Ford review, but they don't appear to do 5W-40 only 0W-30 or 5W-40.

What is better for high temp stability Fully synth of Part synth?

I would go for something that still works at cold temps, so the 5 part will be good, and up it to something like 40 as you suggest. You'll probably find that you can only get fully synthetic on these kind of viscosities. Try a 10-40 though if you don't want to blow loads of dollar on a fully synth oil for it not to cure the low pressure problem. How are you measuring the pressure, do the Zetecs have a pressure sender as standard? If so, it might just be that getting on a bit. Happens on the Pulsars as they age.

What sort of mileage is you engine on?

Yeah, was having a chat with one of the guys here, he's running a Red-top in his kit car and we thought 5W-40 might be the way to go.

I've got an external gauge with temp and pressure senders. Both fairly new.

As for the mileage, I can't remember what the 2.0 was on when I got it, don't think it was overly high and i've only done a couple of thousand on it this year. When I rebuilt it it all looked in good nick, bores still had honing marks et.c etc.

Sounds good fella, go for the 5-40 and see if it has an effect on your pressure At least you can get 5-40 quite cheap so no great loss if there's no difference. My pressure does drop too when it's hot and sitting at idle. The main thing is that if it doesn't increase as you accelerate, then you may have a problem.

Don't forget though, it's not just the piston rings that will have an effect on the pressure, but if you have a buggered valve stem seal that can have a slight detrimental effect too.

Yeah, think i'll have a go with some 5W-40, might get some cheaper oil first and see if it has an effect before spending 70 buck on some nanodrive stuff!

It all seems to do the right things, goes up with revs, sits higher when cold etc. Its just when its very hot it looks to be far too thin.
Valve stem seals were all changed at the rebuild so they should be good!

Fuch's Silkolene Pro S is good stuff and a bit cheaper than that, fully synthetic, 10-50 is what I use
