Morning all,

Well, nearing the end of the engine swap (Thank f**k for that! ) and I wired up the alternator last night.
So, got a crimp on the red wire and connected that up fine but when I was putting on the blue wire is sheared the screw from the alternator.

Had a quick look at the Haynes wiring diagram and as far as I can see the blue wire is just for the "Low Battery" light on the dash.

Can anyone confirm that this is the case and that it shouldnt affect the car running at all?

Not quite paul.

The field windings in the alterntor wont excite without it. Meaning you will have to rev it to get it to start charging. normaly above 3500rpm.

Next question then, does it have to connect to the middle threaded stud or can it be connected to the spare stud (I guess not as IIRC the haynes shows a possibility of two reds) or can it be connected to the body of the alternator?

Am I right in thinking that the plastic part with the studs on it it replaceable? or would I need a qhole new alternator?

It needs to be connected to that middle stud for it to work properly. I'm not sure if they stud/plastic bit is replacable or not though. I think the stud goes inside the alternator and the plastic part stops the wires touching the housing/each other kinda thing.

How much of the stud have you got left?

Not a whole lot, dont think theres enough to even get a thread after a crimp terminal is on it.
Will try and have a proper look tonight, but not hopefull

Will probably drop the alternator off and have a proper look see if I can get something attached to it and then connect the cable onto that.

Either that or I'll just have to drive everywhere two gears lower down to keep it above 3.5k

Just to let you know I stripped my old alternator to have a look at what can be done and that black plastic bit comes off with the middle pole attached like so:

So where does the middle pole go to? Does it go into the alternator or is it to the body?

It doesn't go in the alternator at all, it just terminates inside the bracket

Very odd. Guess it must just be an earth tag then?!?!!?
Will try earthing and see if the light comes on
