Urgent: Driveshafts not fitting correctly...

right, mark has swapped the knackered erst box over with the replacement box on my si last night, but he rang me saying he is struggling with the driveshafts.

The drivers side shaft will not go fully into the box, he said around 5mm left.
He has used advice from Mouse, by fitting the shaft into the hub end first, without the hub connected to the wishbone, to swing the shaft into the box.
And he also says its not the circlip stopping him from getting it into the box.

also he reckons the passenger side shaft seems short? although not sure on that one.


I'm stuck on this, its the LSD box, so does anything special need doing?
They were fitted fine into the knackered box (apart from the box spitting the passenger one out while turning due to the damage the box had)
And im pretty sure all mk3 & 3.5 shafts are the same (hub joint changed over when it went 3.5 but thats it)

Might sound reaaaaaally daft, but is he giving it a bit of turning whilst trying to put it in? I had a bit of a game getting one of my driveshafts in on the Pulsar, just needed a bit of rotation

Not sure, its hard to sort out cause I wasnt there at the time, gonna pop round tonight to have a look with him.

Turning the shaft itself? :)

Yeah I turned the shaft. But also gave it a good bit of forceful pressure when it was in the hub.

It might not be that, but worth a shot. Seems odd that it won't go in though. Usually quite easy.

As far as I understand its 5mm or so that won't go in.
Will have a go trying that!

I had the hub connected to the strut, and gently thumped the hub with my foot in between giving the shaft a little turn. Took a while but it eased into place.

check there is no grit in the splines that could be seizing it
you could try and split the drive shaft from the cv cup and tap it in

Copper slip crap, Took me about 5 attempts to get my drivers side shaft into the hub. same problem, just needs persuasion.

oh and might be obvious but keep cleaning with a wire brush after each attempt between all splines etc.

Right, went down after work.
Alot of head scratching!

Got the shafts in the box fine, ns hub done.

This was the os:

Had to drop the shock off the hub and loosen the top, put the ball joint in first, then with the use of a jack to get that sorted out!!

I have a feeling they might be the wrong wishbones, had a similar problem on the pickup once before...

But it is done.

Car on the road.

Car has a slight shake to it below 50mph (like the rear wheels need balancing, although they were fine for John before the box issues)
50mph I have a big shake, same type of shake the scrote has with a fooked driveshaft.
Goes back to the slight shaking, 80+ and the steering wheel is going for it..

N/S shaft was replaced by John, but because the box was spitting it out... high chance of being bent yes???

Yup, good chance of being bent. I wouldn't run it much either as it'll warp the brake disc too.
