my timing belt tensioner blew up today. the car cut out straight away so im hopeing there will be any other damage valves etc. has anyone had this happen to them before and if so what damage was done. also how easy is changing the belt etc on a 1.6 Si

i guess you need to get a haynes manual on changing the cam belt then you need to put a new cam belt kit on if the head turns with hitting any thing i would also take spark plugs out if thats ok then a compression test the engine but if its low on any of the 4 cylinder then its another head or a engine ...
s said above, its not that bad a job but need to follow a manual and its quite restricted access, be carefull when turning it over to aline the cams so not to cause any more damage and with the plugs out should be easier to feel any contact, its a pain but only way really is to put belt kit on and do compression test, if there has been and contact will bend a valve which wont seal and compression will be down on offending cylinder, if so its a head of job. If only a pair of valves (not pistons) not that bad to just replace those ones
chances are you will need atleast 6 new valves, but get a cambelt kit first (about £40 depending on where you buy it from), fit that, then turn it over by hand first with the spark plugs out, theres a small chance you haven't damaged anything, but you are most likely going to need the head off, have new valves fitted and lapped in, then a pressure test on the head after from a engineers, or fit a 2nd hand head (i would recommend you repair the old head for peace of mind), you will also need a head gasket set and head bolts if the head does have to come off

going to try set timing and turn engine over by hand to see if there is any noticable damage. but as a back up plan ordered another engine for £225 delivered with box and started etc.
yup thats pretty much it, theres a couple grooves in the the crank pully, one of them lines up at 1 o'clock on the sump, and remove the cam cover and use a locking bar to set the cams, if the cams don't line up rotate the crank once more

set the cams and crank to both TDC built it back up and turned it by hand. no sign of anything hitting or getting in way of pistons. so connected battery back up etc now it wont start, it is sparking but not sure if sparking at right time. so im thinking i need to rotate the crank another 360 degrees.
