Looking into my overfuelling and stalling issues led me to have a look at the Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve, PCV, now it appears I do not even have the PCV valve fitted, its definately not where it should be on the Mondeo engines anyway and cant see that it would have been swapped for the 1.6 version as the casing is the Mondeo casing

Anyway, could someone tell me where the pipe that comes off of the PCV valve connects to. This is the pipe that commonly breaks down causing stalling when warm which is exactly what mine is doing and has done since I picked it up

If someone could let me know where the pipe should go I will check it out as I have a spare 2.0 bottom end in the garage which has the proper PCV fitted so I can take the one off of there and fit to mine but I dont know where the pipe should connect back to

I believe the PCV missing is also causing the oil smell I get when warm as it is venting to atmosphere as there is no valve and is then entering the cabin from the engine bay

Also would the lack of PCV cause poor starting, it has to crank for a good few seconds most of the time so if this valve is missing and causing a lack of compression in the bottom end then I thought this could make it take longer to start

Cheers

Scott

the PCV is in the housing that goes on the front of the block behind the exhaust manifold. the pipe follows the shape of the block round to the gearbox end of the inlet manifold.(right hand as your stood infront of it.) its a push on nipple connection if that helps. if its missing surely its chucking oil out of the hole where it should be?. the idea behind it is that the oil vapour and possibly any oil is directed back into the engine via the inlet manifold and not just deposited on the floor. PCV or positive crankcase ventilation also is there to stop the pistons as they go up and down creating pressure pockets and pushing oil where it shouldnt go. PCV missing shouldnt cause poor starting. unless the pipe is split and its sucking in air or sucking it out of the crankcase. unless its stuck open. its only a low poundage spring and a disc in there so there is very little to go wrong. the compression used for combustion is generated by the pistons which are sealed by the rings but id have thought the tell tale blue haze would give that away. when it starts does it idle perfectly or does it hunt a little to begin with?...burning oil at all?

Hope that helps or at least gives you a start :)

Jam.

Here is a picture of what greeted me when I went to look at the PCV to see if the pipe was causing a problem with my idle when warm
Image

As you can see there is no valve in there and it is oily around the area so it has obviously just been venting out there when required !!

There isnt any pipework to return it to the inlet, does it go to one of the nipples on the back of the inlet as I couldnt see anything missing when I had a quick root around and got these pictures earlier

When I start it sometimes it idles fine but other times it hunts for a while then settles and idles fine when it is cold but as soon as it is warm it will try and stall when coming to a stop which I read was the PCV and was greeted by the above when I went to have a look

So far I have got 90 miles to 3/4 of a tank so I imagine I have a massive air leak and alot more fuel is being dumped in by the ECU to keep the engine running

EGR and Pulse Air Systems have also been removed, the picture below shows the top and bottom pipes on the EGR module, the top pipe has a bolt in it to stop any air leaks although the bottom one doesnt, should it or is this ok and not likely to cause any problems
Image

I also found this with another screw in it but I dont know what it should be connected to if anyone could help
Image

The two nipples on the back of the inlet have been joined together which I believe is what is required when the EGR and Pulse Air are both removed and blocked

I also couldnt find any evidence of the Carbon Cannister which I have also read can cause very high fuel consumption which I am experiencing

Sent you a PM as well Jam

Cheers

Just an update on this, I have fitted the spare PCV valve I had and now the car starts first turn of the key so there obviously wasnt enough compression in the bottom end without the valve to get it starting properly

Another problem solved anyway !!
