i seem to be the only member of fiesta-si.com that is a complete amateur when it comes to the mechanics of a fiesta si or cars in general? i'm alright at the car DIY but apart from that most is a foreign language. would love to be able to get down and dirty at the weekend and go crazy with confidence instead of being scared even to simply attempt to take the front fog lights out?

slowly you'll gain confidence too do things that are more complicated, but i you ever did get stuck we're always here too give help and advice

Take it slowly, write things down if you wont remember where it goes back! As onslack says, you will gain more confidence gradually!

Don't rush things too.

Before i started driving i knew nothing about cars, 3 years later and im confident to do a complete engine rebuild, rings bearings seals the lot. If you gave me bolt now from an si theres a good chance i could tell you what its for and where it goes!

yeah its all about not rushing things, i did get quite confident working on my fez

took on a challenge with a mate of mine and did a 2.0 conversion too my fez, neither of us had ever worked on a fez before

i had read the 2.0 conversion guide sooo many times knew what to do from memory just from reading that guide, was my toilet reading material

i am far from confident working on my cossie, but with help from mates who know what they are doing i'm getting there

i'm not as good as cookie, engine rebuild is my next challenge

dont put yourself down on not being a mechanical god quite yet, as most things in life knowledge comes with experiance!. someone brought up on a farm might be able to strip a engine at 10 but not everyone can, try start with a haynes manual and do basic maintenance stuff first as you get more confident you will do more, and dont worry about snapping the plastic panel trims clips, with age and the cold most will

ben thought i'd make a point of saying; when browsing through the haynes manuel don't be daunted by it. It daunts me. Ideally if your looking at doing something you need to read it while stood by your car looking at it... (thats if your self teaching yourself).
I was same as you took me a few years and my biggest achievement is headgasket/waterpump/cambelt combo.
Always helps to have mates who know abit aswell......

im in the same boat, im doin little bits here and there with the haynes manuel, i think it helps having the right tools at hand to be able to attempt the jobs

just take your time dont rush and dont worry,im sure of you come stuck we will be able to talk you through it,and yeah the airbox is a pain in the arse to get to lol

I cant rebuild an engine, i wouldnt have a clue.
but I can do most things to maintain a car like thermostats, water/oil pumps, wishbones, suspension etc, I'd never pay for a service in a garage now.

my pointers would be:

*buy a haynes manual, screwdrivers, axel stands, trolley jack and a decent socket set, no monkey metal. halfords are a rip off but thier professional tools are nice

*underseal your car, getting underneath is a great way to learn, you can see lots in the engine bay but you can see lots underneath as well.

*learn to do a basic service - oil/filter, air filter and spark plugs. piss easy and you'll gain confidence.

*learn how the cooling system works, does your fez have nice rusty coolant? flush the system and rad and treat it to a new thermostat and bleed the system, gives you great insight into what could be a future problem.

take it from there, soon you'll be splicing looms, fitting bigger discs, changing belts etc.
