I would check every single hose in the engine bay, one might have a slight leak, i had this problem, one was the bottom rad hose as my gearbox mount had gone. And just recently, on my hcs engine, there is a hose going from the head to the inlet manifold on the back, not sure of they have this is on the 16v engine, i will look at my 16v engine at work tomorrow and find out and tell you if you cant see it. but if it is there, its worth checking out possibly.
I had a very minor leak coming from somewhere - minor as in, would go from max to min after a couple of months, i couldnt find it at all for weeks when it started to get slightly worse, thought it was the headgasket, but no smoke, then driving down the road i saw loads of steam coming from the engine, so pulled over, still no sign of any leaks but expansion tank was empty, walked to tesco and got some water, started up and still couldnt see anything.. so i started squeezing the rad hoses while the engine was off, and i could hear a slight air leak.. eventually found where it was coming from - this pipe on the inlet manifold... reason i couldnt see the leak ever was because, it drips directly onto the exhaust, so it evaporates in seconds! The hose had failed due to old age i think, and the jubilie clip had failed too, so got new ones of each.. sorted!
Long winded story, but it gets the point across lol
