If you feel comfortable dropping you engine and taking it completely apart then give it a try.

As mentioned a 'new' engine will be the easiest way and probably not much more expensive.

Try a website like

I found an engine in the past that way, fill in a form and breakers all over the place get back to you with quotes posted to you.

As you say there may be more problems than the big ends as this can cause damage elsewhere.
