Hi Fellas, Can anyone point to a good idiot guide to setting tappets and finding TDC please ?
Its for my 1.3 MK4 please?
270,000 miles and getting a tad rattly now so iv decided its time to go in.
Any help or advise would be most welcome please.

tdc can be done by crankshaft pulley marks, or take number 1 spark plug out, out a long screwdriver/socket extension bar in there and rotate until its at its highest point. simple

If you don't want to do the grinding part of that link, using 0.25 and 0.15 on the feeler gauges is suitable to account for wear, unless you have crazy thin feeler gauges.

Tonwah, with good maintenance these engines could hit the 500k mark. It's hard to find out as the ones still going are going to keep on going. Hell, you can run them without oil for a few hundred miles! There's a reason ford kept this design going for over 40 years lol.

Yeah I would use feeler gauges, thats what I did with my old hcs back in the day. They are good engines indeed, I managed to kill one though through oil starvation, apart from that, it got abused to high hell and didnt miss a beat!

worn tappets have little grooves in them that make feeler gauges lie to you, its good to overly tighten them to counter this, not much max 0.1 of a mm

but yeh feeler gauges are what ya need iv done this on two of my old hcs engines and both times you couldnt hear it running... both still blew up thou again starvation of oil hey hoo in went a zetec!
